suckers – it gets your body movin’(2009)

31 03 2009

suckers

reminiscent of tv on the radio, or yeasayer (their upcoming ep is produced by yeasayer’s anand wilder), brooklyn, new york’s suckers are another in a long line of BK-bred artsy/atmospheric rockers. this song, ‘it gets your body movin’, sounds HUGE with it’s melancholy melody, thunderous drums, and anthemic chorus. it kinda reminda me of arcade fire’s ‘wake up’ (or maybe i’m watching the ‘where the wild things are’ trailer too much). either way the song is amazing and i can’t wait to hear the ep from these guys.

eye alaska – walk like a gentleman (2009)

31 03 2009

first new song off of their upcoming debut full length. really anticipating this one. their yellow and elephant EP was some of the best shit i heard in 2007, and this song feels like a natural progression. there’s a very heavy r&b influence to a lot of their songs, and “walk like a gentleman” is no different. it also has a very 90s pop rock/borderline boy band sound. i’m not trippin. it’s a great song.

listen to “walk like a gentleman” on eye alaska’s myspace.

also, make good on the jump for some studio updates from the guys that you might’ve missed.

video: good old war – that’s whats wrong (2009)

31 03 2009

the days away break-up was a bit rough for me personally, but having good old war around makes it a tiny bit better. i kinda slept on this album for pretty much all of last year, but picked it back up in february. that’s whats wrong is the latest video, and a good song to boot.

they’ve just re-released their debut, only way to be alone, today on itunes with a bunch of bonus videos and their purevolume sessions, which shall be posted here sometime in the near future.

del the funky homosapien – funk man (2009)

30 03 2009

homeboy’s been around for quite sometime. i’ve heard a handful of his songs on and off, but was never a huge fan. however, due to the current state of the economy, del’s put together a stimulus package of his own — in the form of his 7th studio album.

the album, titled funk man, is available in its entirety for $0. be sure to grab it and support the fact that artists are getting with the times and still wanna look out for their fans.

you can pretty much grab it in any bitrate you’d like. from low VBR to FLAC. hot.

ac slater – banger (2009)

30 03 2009

unfortunately, no mario lopez OR broadway on this one. ac slater is a dj out of brooklyn who just dropped his new ep today, titled rock it out. it’s pretty much based around this song, which is pretty much bound to set fire to your pants.

head over to party like us records on myspace and check out a bulk of the tracks on their player. the ep has a handful of remixes on it too. namely from drop the lime and tittsworth.

rick ross – usual suspects (ft. nas and kevin cossom) (2009)

30 03 2009

i really think that in spite of all the shit with 50, this album will get the love it’s shaping up to seem like it’ll deserve. plus, you can never go wrong with a nas cameo. kevin cossom is on the hook, and wrote grizzly’s current favorite obsession, keri hilson’s “knock you down”.

neko case – live on the interface (2009)

30 03 2009

so the always stunning neko case dropped in on spinner’s aol interface to do a few acoustic numbers from her latest, middle cyclone. personally, i think she sounds best stripped down and just belting it out with one of the most powerful, smokey voices around. her co-pilot kelly hogan also compliments her voice perfectly; one of the best sounding duos out there. neko has an incredible talent for crafting instantly catchy, haunting songs without use of the conventional verse chorus verse structure that have as much old soul in them as anything loretta lynn wrote 20+ years ago.

mixtape: charles hamilton – the pink lavalamp (2008)

30 03 2009

still hyped from his performance at sxsw, i’m posting up my favorite charles hamilton mixtape, the pink lavalamp. the man himself was handing out copies of this mix at his show (my first physical piece of hamilton media!). pink lavalamp showcases a more personal, introspective side of charles hamilton, including a song that was a former suicide note (shinin’), a few joints about his personal struggles and self conflict (music, boy who cried wolf) and an amazing closing track where he drops his guard a bit and lets the emotion take over his voice and the song (i’ll be around). a little less boastful then he would become on later releases, charles hamilton’s earlier work displays an emotional depth and intelligence that is vital to his persona as a young passionate rapper.

video: bobby ray – i’ll be in the sky live (2009)

30 03 2009

some dude named greg the dude put together this video with pieces of bobby’s performance at sxsw. i wish he would’ve kept the live version of the song (b.o.b. is next level with his live show), but this is good shit regardless.

he’s also got a video similar to this one coming out for blu and exile’s “dancing in the rain.” you can catch a snippet here. i’m not sure what this dude’s on, but this video is fucking TALL. that’s right, tall. if your monitor is 15′ like mine, then don’t bother. this is optimal for those LCD shits that are bigger than my tv.

video: as tall as lions – stab city (live at sxsw 2009)

29 03 2009

here’s a video we have from sxsw. ran out of memory, so we didn’t get a chance to get some new videos. poor decision on our part. but it’s better than nothing, right? here’s them performing “stab city” off of their 2006 self-titled album. the bass gets a bit seedy on the video, but other than that, no problems.

passion pit – the reeling (2009)

29 03 2009

one of our 5 loyal readers, kyle, put me onto passion pit literally when this blog started. their chunk of change EP was one of my favorites last year. since then, it’s safe to say they’ve gotten a lot bigger. they were one of sxsw’s staple acts (and i didn’t get to catch a single one of their sets, sadly) and are become a blogosphere staple.

in any sense, this is the first song released from their upcoming album, manners, which is due out may 19. should be a good one. i’m liking this song a lot.

noise ratchet – unreleased album (2004)

27 03 2009

i don’t know how many of you ever listened to noise ratchet back in the day, but prior to breaking up, they recorded an album that was supposed to come out in 2004/2005. the band broke up before the album could see the light of day and it was shelved.. until now. they’ve put the album up on reverb nation for full stream, which i’m personally pretty excited about. if you want to hear some “new” material from a blast from the past, head over to the page and stream the album that never was.

chase pagan – bells and whistles (2009)

27 03 2009

the wonderfully talented, criminally underrated (seriously, it’s ridiculous) chase pagan has put up (for streaming) three new songs from his upcoming album, bells and whistles, which is due out june 9th. you’d be doing yourself a great disservice by not giving this man a chance. he’s got an incredible voice, and musical talent to spare. in this humble bears opinion, he will one day be up there with the likes of the great rufus wainwright. experience the magic now.

death cab for cutie – my mirror speaks/i was once a loyal lover (2009)

26 03 2009

death cab for cutie

tracks 3 and 4 up from dcfc’s the open door ep are now up on stereogum. my mirror speaks finds ben gibbard at odds with himself and his mirrored reflection over heavy drum and bass. i was once a loyal lover has more different sounds than an entire dcfc album put together, perfect for a song about a coming of age identity crisis. definitely looking forward to the ep.

weworemasks.com interview: as tall as lions (march 19, 2009)

26 03 2009

last week at sxsw, as tall as lions rolled through and played a couple of shows, one of which i was able to attend. for anyone who’s been a fan of this band will probably find it settling to know that the new stuff is unbelievable. they played a couple of new songs, which basically sounded like everything you’d expect from a band who is on a progression from their previous albums. they also played a handful of shit off of the 2006 self-titled album, which is probably the best album i’ve heard since 2006.

jerome and i got the chance to sit down with lead singer/guitarist dan nigro for a good 20 minutes, and he talked about everything going into the new album, you can’t take it with you, switching producers and all your other ATAL needs.

read the interview after the jump. it’s a bit lengthy.
