movie recap: UP (2009)

9 06 2009

this is a bit late, considering i saw this the monday after opening weekend, but i figured for the 3 readers and the 1 jerome that have yet to see pixar’s beautiful new masterpiece yet needed a little nudge to the movie theaters as soon as possible.

up is pixar’s tenth venture, and i have not had more faith in a movie company in the last 3 years. after the highly disappointing (and only pixar movie i’d give lower than a B in rating) ratatouille, pixar returned with their most introspective work to date, wall-e. naturally a movie of wall-e’s caliber destroyed both the box office and critics alike, and this goes the same for up, which is still standing at a relentless 98% on rotten tomatoes.

i know a lot of of you are weary of reading, so hit the jump for the rest of it.

up is the tale of carl frederickson, on a voyage that is deep rooted in his childhood, with just about the cutest boy to ever be animated, russell. but let’s rewind a bit.

carl is a young boy with a knack for adventures and charles muntz. he soon meets ellie, a cute, nerdy girl who’s down for some of that same muntz action. the two soon grow old together, and share a dream of one day moving their house to paradise falls. technically, this isn’t a spoiler, but ellie dies, and carl’s distraught at the fact they never saw their dream come to fruition.

as his house becomes the property of the city and he’s slowly being pushed into a retirement home, carl decides to up and get the hell out of there, in iconic balloonic (i made that word up) fashion. he maintain’s the fact that he’ll keep the promise to ellie. this is where russell comes in and the “adventure” begins.

enough of the plot though. up is beautiful, simply put. if you’re unlike me and aren’t a desensitized robot (even wall-e has emotions), be prepared to shed a few tears. however, it’s as hilarious and entertaining as it is moving and sentimental.

after seeing wall-e, i was convinced that pixar was on a mission to make a kid’s movie for adults. after the release of up, i couldn’t be more convinced. the pixar franchise has landed two of the finest films i’ve seen in the past three years.

do yourself a favor and get to a movie theater ASAP. and seriously, spend the extra $2-4 for the 3D version. cause once UP leaves theaters, you’ll be busting your own balls at the fact that you missed out on one of the best movie experiences in a long time.

and shit, i kept the 3D glasses.

grade: A+
