hellohighwater [ex-as cities burn] (2009)

31 07 2009

so as you may have heard, as cities burn have disbanded, but lead singer cody bonnette has wasted no time in resurfacing and putting some of these new demos up on his myspace. the project’s currently called hellohighwater, which is also a nice shout to acb. anyway, check out a new song (tentatively) titled “aerial,” along with a somewhat acoustic version of “daughter,” currently under the name “briar rose.”

shouts to bedwettingcosmonaut for the heads up.

stream the two songs at hellohighwater’s myspace page.

congratulations to fat tony… (2009)

31 07 2009

congrats to my dude fat tony for winning a 2009houston press music award for the best underground hip-hop. there’s a lot of good up-and-comers in this city, so it’s nice to see him cop one. this is his second year in a row picking up the award. here’s to a 3-peat in 2010′s.

video: clipse – kinda like a big deal f. kanye west (live at webster hall) (2009)

31 07 2009

living in new york city has gotta be the most convenient shit ever. catchin’ something as common (no pun intended) as a clipse show and having a kanye west cameo seems to be the standard, now. it’s all good though. it’s guaranteed that bun b will be at every big hip-hop show in houston, so i’ll see him tonight at the cudi x b.o.b. x asher roth show. anyway, this show was for a diesel party and the roots came through, as well as lykke li and um…cobra starship. can we say random lineup?

video: the fall of troy – studio update (2009)

31 07 2009

the fall of troy posted a studio update while they’re in the process of recording/tracking their new album, in the unlikely event. tfot is one of the most consistent heavier bands that i personally enjoy. even though i could skip a few off of manipulator, some of their best songs are on the album. anyway, catch some previews of the new album, drum fills and thomas erak shrieking like a dying elephant.

mixtape: c.s. rucker – the hungry kid (2009)

31 07 2009

there’s gonna be a slew of new artists coming your way soon courtesy of weworemasks. we’ve recently gotten a bunch of good shit in the mail so i’ll slowly be introducing you to a few artists you may not have previously heard. the first of the batch is c.s. rucker, an emcee out of albuquerque, new mexico.

c.s. rucker has recently put out his new tape, the hungry kid, and i think a lot of you will really dig what’s going on here. it features a slew of great production, courtesy of international dj’s and producers freon, kid rolex and a few more. don’t take this the wrong way, but as far as his actual music goes, he sounds like a less nasal and a more vocal version of charles hamilton spitting over some production you would hear on a dizzee rascal album. i know a lot of you don’t like chuck (i’m off that bandwagon as well) but you can’t deny the man’s lyrical ability.

anyway, check out c.s. rucker’s mixtape and look out for him in the near future. he’s also part of a clothing company (keycitycrew), which you can check out here.

video: atmosphere – yesterday [live in north carolina] (2009)

30 07 2009

slug hits up my favorite song off when life gives you lemons… on his current tour, which is hitting houston next month. i couldn’t give a shit less about seeing eyedea and abilities perform, so i’ll probably pass on it. i’ve seen atmosphere a handful of times, so i’m not sweating it. great performance of “yesterday,” though.

album review: rx bandits – mandala (2009)

30 07 2009

so for the past few weeks, you’ve seen all the hype this blog could possibly conjure up for what was set to be one of my personal favorite band’s upcoming release. rx bandits are loved across the board here at weworemasks, and with good reason.

after getting the chance to interview the guys and catching dates on their current US tour (cough, sidebar, cough), this is where the hype comes around full circle.

hit the jump for the review.

29 07 2009

Photobucket

since the announcement of daft punk being at the helm for the soundtrack to tron: legacy, the entire indieverse (gotta stop usng that word) has been buzzing about the dream collaboration. well here, via iheartcomix, is the theme for said film; the first new music from daft punk since human after all. yup, dark and ominous, exactly what you’d expect for the sequel where um, flynnlives.

video: mew – introducing palace players (2009)

29 07 2009

“don’t feel like an idiot if it all doesn’t add up in the end.” – mew, in regard to their new video for introducing palace players.

sure i’ll take a shot at it: ‘cube-form, alone and terrified in a misty wood, signals via laserbeam to his many-sided kin-folk. finding naught to communicate with other than a lowly snail and a posessed car, cube-form ventures on. poly-form (in its many configurations) stops a minute from tending to his unicorn to send out scouts in search of their meandering rhomb-brethren. utilizing the greatest power known to man, teamwork, the other poly-forms triangulate a trajectory to cube-form, who finally back amongst his kindred form up to complete the monolith’.

who’s the idiot now?

the niceguys – the pre-show mixtape (2009)

29 07 2009

the niceguys are a four-piece out of my hometown. back when, my friend kendall (who is friends with one of the members) put me on to them assuming i’d like em. at the time, i saw a lot of potential, but wasn’t really too enthused, so i just decided to keep an open tab on them.

few months down the line, i happened to accidentally catch them open up a wale show, and it was one of their first shows, so again — i saw a lot of stage presence and just an overall step-up.

but now, they’re gearing up for the release of their album the show, and have decided to drop a mixtape to prepare the webs for what’s to come, and i’m definitely hearing the vast improvements in nearly every aspect of the band. those rattling’ NYC-influenced beats, a flow that is somewhere between dipset and the cool kids (srsly.) and even a great cover to their EP (hey, it’s important.)

check em’ out. houston stand up!

note: one of the girls from my college advertising class is in this video. such a small world.

video: tiffany amber theissen x funny or die (2009)

29 07 2009

i’m sure kelly kapowski was many of ya’ll’s first crush, so you’ll enjoy this. tiffani amber theissen addresses the rumors of the saved by the bell cast reunion on late night with jimmy fallon. i won’t ruin anything, but it’s pretty funny.

brand new – fall tour dates (2009)

29 07 2009

yeah, yeah, old poster. but i used it anyway. halloween in houston will host two of my favorite bands on the same night, so to say that ‘i’m very excited’ is still a bit of an understatement. as much as i don’t mind seeing thrice for the 18th time (seriously.), i wish glassjaw could’ve opened up the texas dates. however, video footage from their northeastern dates will suffice as long as i get that god-forsaken EP.

weworemasks will see you at:

october 30th the palladium ballroom // dallas, tx
october 31st verizon wireless theater // houston, tx

rest of the dates after the jump.

video: as tall as lions – you can’t take it with you [trailer] (2009)

29 07 2009

i couldn’t possibly be more excited for this album. the wait’s killing me. i’m not going to be anymore hyperbolic than this. as tall as lions’ self-titled is probably in my top ten albums of all time, and easily the best album from the last 3 years. i’ve listened to it nearly 400 times it seems, and i still don’t skip a single song on it. but no more hyperboles!

chances are with that kind of pressure, it won’t live up to s/t, but if it’s half as good, then i’m completely content.

anyway, peep this trailer, courtesy of alt. press. you can’t take it with you drops august 18th.

music go music – warm in the shadows & light of love (2009)

29 07 2009

music go music

it took me about 10 seconds upon initial listen to figure out who i identified music go music’s disco sound with – ABBA (later confirmed with every blurb ever written describing the band). taken with the right dose of irony (and what indie-bopper doesn’t?) the mysteriously anonymous members certainly have the 70′s formula down, and it is funky. their full length lp expressions is out oct. 6th.

ooh. chromeo comes in all sensual and synth heavy (that’s just chromeo) on their cover of the eagles’ ‘i can’t tell you why’. great to hear from the montreal duo who have tucked away since releasing their slick and hip-swiveling fancy footwork 2 years ago. lord, has it been two years that we’ve been dancing to ‘bonafied lovin’?

video: grade – studio update (2009)

28 07 2009

okay. let’s be blatant: grade were an emo/hardcore punk outfit. associate any connotations you want with those labels, i don’t care. under the radar is an absolute classic, if not criminally underrated album. seven years after their breakup, the band is back in the studio recording tracks for at both ends magazine’s final issue. here’s to hoping the band decides to continue making more music in the future as grade.

LOST – the nine biggest revelations at comic-con (2009)

28 07 2009

pardon the nerd for a bit. there’s been two tv posts in one day now, so bare with me. as some of you know, comic-con was this past weekend. naturally, the LOST crew was in attendance and decided to shed some light on the season five finale, as well as plans for season six. considering the fact that everyone has way too many questions concerning what actually went down, this is a must-read for anyone who wants solid facts.

if you’re like many of the nerds online who want to figure everything out for yourselves, then don’t read this.

i’m excited that the story is coming to a close, but i’m not at all excited that i won’t be looking forward to a new season of LOST come may 2010. tear.
