video: kevin devine – another bag of bones [pink couch sessions] (2009)

30 09 2009

a hi-definition up close and personal performance of k dev rockin’ “another bag of bones” on a…pink couch. brother’s blood is in constant rotation and will probably see a top 10 spot at the end of 2009.

video: the xx – islands [live with jools holland] (2009)

30 09 2009

i haven’t gotten the chance to post about the xx yet, so consider this an introduction. unless of course, you had heard about them and failed to tell me about them prior to a week ago – then you’re just an asshole. i’m not quite sure what made me check out this band. maybe because i was intrigued that the band name wasn’t quite propagating being straight edge or promoting porno, or maybe i was intrigued because XX beer makes me stay thirsty.

either way, the xx’s eponymous record is one of the most eerily cute albums i’ve ever heard in my life. a bit overstated, but i’ve been listening to it every night before bed and i won’t even try to hide about how sweet my dreams have been. a male/female vocal duo fronting a darkpop band out of the UK, whose songs are mostly about sex. or drugs. now you tell me why you haven’t checked em out yet.

oh and the LED lights.

video: the roots – how i got over (2009)

30 09 2009

just to make matters worse, it so happens that the best house band of all time released a video today too, and i coincidentally decided to post it right after the common video.

ok, i planned it. here’s the official video for the roots’ beautiful new joint, “how i got over.”

video: common – universal mind control [alternate version] (2009)

30 09 2009

no clue as to why this is just now leaking, but regardless – this kills the original video. pharrell’s actually in this one too – so plus points for that, too.

i just want to take this time to say previous engagements have bitten us in the ass. got invited to the hennessy artistry tour but can’t go. thought i’d shut down my own cool brag so i could at least cool bragged that i could’ve gone to this tour.

video: dirty projectors – when the world comes to an end live on fallon (2009)

30 09 2009

the dirty projectors stopped by fallon to perform a new song and drop jaws across the country. “when the world comes to an end” features the ladies of dirty projectors bouncing their vocals off each other, creating a mesmerizing effect that you could swear was computer programmed. very well done and coordinated.

after the show ?uestlove tweeted a video of the same song performed acapella and to more stirring effect in the fallon dressing rooms.

chris brown – transform ya f. lil wayne and swizz beatz (2009)

29 09 2009

this song is a mess. the beat’s dope. chris brown sounds great, wayne sounds like an idiot, the lyrics are ridiculous. weezy – a good girl into a freak sounds an AWFUL lot like good girl gone bad. i’m not talking about cobra starship, either. anyway, CB is back, and i’ll be looking forward to graffiti. let’s hope it has better artwork than the single, too.

video: consequence – whatever u want f. kanye west and john legend (2009)

29 09 2009

video’s weak and underwhelming, much like the song. that’s what these three dudes get for dropping “grammy family” on us a few years back. a few notes: legend’s melodies own this track and the collective gyrating owns this video.

video: as tall as lions – live on the daily habit (2009)

29 09 2009

sweet, sweet sounds. as tall as lions visited the daily habit studios to flawlessly perform two songs off of you can’t take with you. “in case of rapture” is posted up above and below the cut is footage of “circles.” definitely a top 10 contender, and i’m really looking forward to catching them open for mute math at the end of this month.

album review: brand new – daisy (2009)

28 09 2009

brand new is one of the few bands that have stuck with me through that whole ‘scene’ explosion of the 2001s and 2002s. they’ve been consistently impressive and months ago, i would’ve sworn on the fact that jesse lacey was like a lurker shadow of mine who was writing my autobiography. 2006′s the devil and god couldn’t have hit me at a more perfect time. that album has since become my favorite brand new record (to the dismay of many, i’m sure).

however, daisy is a disappointment. it’s scatterbrained and lyrically just doesn’t sit with me whatsoever. i had a hard time relating to a good amount of it and after two listens, i was left uninspired and bored with it. after finally deciding to review it, i ended up spinning it about 8 more times in the process, a lot of it began to grow on me. that being said, it still isn’t the brand new album i was waiting 3 years for.

review after the jump.

video: deftones confirm a new album is in the works (2009)

28 09 2009

my favorite group of mexicans (other than panda’s family) sat down with some french bastard to chat it up about being a headliner for the pukkelpop festival and confirms a new album at the 5:45 mark.

i’m excited, especially since eros was scrapped and saturday night wrist was a bit underwhelming. also, get well soon chi.

video: skyzoo – outta control freestyle (2009)

28 09 2009

skyzoo hops in the booth with dj eclipse to drop a few bars. try to ignore dj eclipse’s adlibs or hire someone to smack the shit out of him. he’s almost as bad as khaled on this one.

in other news, i recently checked out skyzoo’s record the salvation, and it is fantastic. how i hadn’t heard much material before is beyond me. checking out the record on the sole basis of the production credits was probably the best choice. it’s definitely one of the better hip-hop records that dropped this year and will be catching more Xs and Os from me in the near future.
