show recap: alkaline trio + cursive (march 26, 2010)

31 03 2010

the last time alkaline trio headlined a set in houston in october of 2008 had completely different circumstances. rise against canceled, so alkaline trio had to step up in typical “the show must go on!” fashion and play a short stint of headline sets. this time around, they’ve had minor major label success, a charting album in this addiction and fellow lushes cursive along for the ride for their own headlining tour. what’s come to be expected by any trio set these days is a fair share of cult classics and new songs, distributed evenly amongst an hour and a half set. having cursive on the tour was a huge bonus for myself, personally.

anyway, read on.

video: flying lotus – idioteque [radiohead cover] (2010)

31 03 2010

flylo throws a radiohead fan favorite into his own sets and puts his own touches on it. i personally love it, but results may very. i know how sensitive some of you radiohead fans can get.

video: janelle monae – tight rope [f. big boi] (2010)

31 03 2010

soon enough, janelle monae will be hi-jacking the female aspect of the music industry and giving it a hell of a run for its money. with her visuals for her first single off of the archandroid, she manages to pull off a music video with merely elements of choreographed dance (in a tuxedo mind you) with a small crew of folks and a big boi cameo; and i couldn’t be more satisfied.

video: j cole – who that? [new song] (2010)

31 03 2010

j cole is going to dominate any and every freshman on the list, not to mention almost every veteran that drops a record this year. this shit is completely insane. here’s a new joint tentatively titled “who that,” which was performed tonight at some showcase that i couldn’t go to/give a shit about since i wasn’t there. hmph.

weworemasks.com’s sxsw recap (2010)

30 03 2010

sxsw is a lovely time of year where all of our friends from various cities in texas decide to congregate in austin for all of it’s lush atmosphere (think about it) and an endless lineup of flavor-of-the-year bands. all three bears, along with our videographer of the week josh, @klainep and grizzly’s main squeeze would become the wolfpack to scour the streets of austin in hopes of catching something memorable and damaging our livers.

this year, we’d spend a lot of time at rachael ray’s showcase (a first), walking (typical) and waiting in hopeless lines. we faced our share of challenges this year, but the bears prevailed and left austin alive with most of our parts in tact. as if this 3000 word recap isn’t enough for you all, then we will have full sets (yes, full!) of theophilus london, japandroids, fang island and local natives coming soon. stay tuned for those.

now grab a PBJ or PBR and enjoy the tales from beyond the bears.

charles hamilton & b.o.b – paperboy (2010)

30 03 2010

posted the above footage yesterday, and now we have the first track of a few from charles hamilton and bobby ray. there isn’t anything here that isn’t on point for me. both cats put it down on their verses (bobby ray in particular blew the shit up), and the hook is ill. not what i was expecting from them, this is on some straight trunk music. can’t wait to hear what else the duo have to offer.

video: kanye west – a capella freestyle (2002)

30 03 2010

via radioplanet TV:

Just before Kanye West wrapped his October 2002 interview with DJ Whoo Kid, he dished out one more acapella for the camera! The song turned out to be his freestyle “My Girlfriend” over Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s “03 Bonnie and Clyde,” which Kanye produced for The Blueprint 2 album. Check out the final version from Kanye below, from his Freshman Adjustment Vol. 2 project!

tiiiight. check ye’s get up. hilarious.

video: raekwon – canal street (2010)

30 03 2010

how can an album with such great tracks such as “canal street” translate so poorly to video? i don’t know, but here’s my vote for the ob4clII team to stop making the same music video for every song on this album.

song still bangs though.

mixtape: wait what – the notorious xx (2010)

30 03 2010

the notorious b.i.g. and the xx are two entities that prove for one of the most unlikely pairings i’ve ever heard. however, wait what music recently hit us up with this eye-grabbing project. taking the xx’s debut record and blanketing them with some of biggie’s greatest vocal cuts. sounds fuckin’ belligerant, but is proving to be quite the listen. definitely suggest checking it out. you can hit the cut for a stream or just go ahead and download it.

the hold steady- rock problems (2010)

30 03 2010

heaven is whenever is out may 4th, and for their second released song from the album, the hold steady return to form with an anthemic, power-chord heavy tale of girls, burnouts and the devil. your basic “the boss by way of brooklyn” fodder the hold steady is so adept at dishing. hear it over at nymag.com or below.

video: delorean – stay close (2010)

30 03 2010

delorean’s video to their wistfully anxious ode “stay close” is an overexposed, saturated pastiche of waterworks and the joyous people awash within. somehow that sounded like a commercial for a gay iced tea.

video: mgmt – flash delirium (2010)

30 03 2010

after all that fooferah that was the disastrous reception for mgmt’s first single from their album congratulations, the boys went ahead and streamed the album in its entirety as well as made this unsettling video for “flash delirium.” personally i would have stuck to riding that lsd wave, as ventriloquist dummies are just plain creepy. i’m looking at you, jeff dunham!

common – testify [88-keys hand on the bible remix] (2010)

29 03 2010

while on tour with kidz in the hall, donnis, and izza kizza, 88-keys stumbled upon this long lost remix he put together for the track off common’s be. unfortunately, com passed on the remix, but we’re now graced with the track. you can read the full story behind the track here. personally, i think it would’ve made a great addition to the testify single, especially if ‘ye had gotten his wish and added brandy to the hook.

video: wu-massacre’s artwork unveiling (2010)

29 03 2010

aside from this deplorable video interface, this is some great material. here’s an inside look at the artwork unveiling behind the wu-massacre effort. i definitely can get with the record, but middle fingers to def jam if you guys really rushed the project. i think a lot more could’ve been done with it, as it’s more of an EP than anything.

and seriously, this interface is something bubba sparxx would deem ‘uglaaaaaaaay.’

video: charles hamilton and b.o.b working on paperboy (2010)

29 03 2010

here we go, folks. our sxsw video fiend/friend josh cornejo was on hand to get theophilus london’s entire set from the df loft/malverde. the footage is definitely worth checking out, as theo performs cuts off of his upcoming mixtape i want you (“flying overseas”) and fan favorites off of this charming mixtape (“always love u,” “humdrum town”) in the flyest of denim.

mixtape: mateo – underneath the sky chapter 3 (2010)

28 03 2010

spaced on this, but a couple of weeks ago, LA’s mateo dropped chapter 3 of his underneath the sky mixtapes. mateo drops a few reworks in this one, including lady gaga, jay-z, and drake, along with a music video from his recent live release. like the first two chapters (which you can find in the archives, hit up the search bar), this one is definitely worth your time. apparently mateo has signed with myspace’s record label (erm…) and is working on his debut release. keep an eye/ear out.

video: the niceguys EPK (2010)

27 03 2010

clipse + the niceguys just played a show at my old school while i was off at the alkaline trio/cursive show (HEY I KNOW I HAD A DILEMMA MAN. NO NEED TO RUB IT IN) and i’ve been kicking myself for missing the show. if i had gone to clipse/the niceguys, i’d still be kicking myself – so it’s a win/win/lose/lose situation.

or something.

in any case, the niceguys have put together a fine EPK that’ll take you back to their humble beginnings and their slow crawl to fame. these guys have a hell of a future ahead of em, and having recently opened shows for the likes of wale, j cole and the clipse, it’s safe to say things are falling to place. and if you’re completely oblivious, you may have missed the memo on the crew being our current spotlight, so dive into that if you haven’t already.

video: mumford & sons – interface sessions (2010)

27 03 2010

aw yeah. london’s mumford & sons got their honky tonk blues what the hell ever-y paws into the interface studios for a nice session. this is not to sound like a complaint, but these performances are damn near the closest you could get to the album versions. “little lion man” is up top, “timshel,” “the cave” and “white blank page” can all be seen at the page on spinner’s site.

love on it.
