interview: gatsbys american dream (2011)

31 03 2011

This interview was easily one of the greatest things to happen to this blog. There’s always that one band who you loved unconditionally through all of their releases and shows, even if everyone else didn’t. As a collective, we’re all fans of Gatsbys American Dream and had all had our own memories of the band long before we started weworemasks and even longer before we became friends. After seeing two reunion shows at this year’s SXSW festival, we made sure to get our contacts in order to make this interview happen.

In the 20 minute interview we had on the phone, singer Nic Newsham and I discussed the reunion shows, among other things, which include their future musical endeavors with GAD, as well as who’s releasing the album and of course, Nic’s perspective on the music industry. Hit the jump and read the interview. Follow em on twitter and lets get excited about rock music again.

Edit: I just realized, I met Panda and Sunbear for the first time at two different GAD shows. Panda was at an As Cities Burn/Gym Class/GAD tour, and Sunbear was at the Starting Line/GAD tour. Insanity. Nostalgia doesn’t get any cooler than that, folks.

video: the hangover II – full trailer (2011)

31 03 2011

this looks better than i could’ve imagined it, honestly. sequels like this rarely work out, but i have high hopes for this one.

a few notes:

-doug is in fact, in this movie
-”all i wanted was a breakfast brunch!”
-i’ve gotten way too used to ken jeong as ‘senor chang.’ luckily, the two characters are typecasted shells of each other.

too-da-loo motherfuckers!

video: kevin devine – nervous energies sessions (2011)

31 03 2011

the always charming kevin devine stops by the nervous energies studios to perform two new songs: “between the concrete and the clouds,” “11.17.10″ and “luxemburg,” in an effort to preview three new songs off of his forthcoming album, due out in late summer. other videos, including a bad books track, below the cut.

video: katy perry – e.t. [f. kanye west] (2011)

31 03 2011

first off, i’ve never liked this song. even with a visual, including all of katy’s perry’s assets, wasn’t enough to get me to slightly bob my head at the track. that might be due to the fact that everyone’s trying to put on ugly garb in the midst of lady gaga’s absence. newsflash: we don’t need another gaga. hell, it’s definitely at the point where we don’t need gaga anymore.

I MEAN WHO THE HELL OK’D PERRY’S CORNROWS?

stream: manchester orchestra – april fool (2011)

31 03 2011

the atlanta troupe’s album doesn’t hit stores until may 10th, but you can stream a brand new track from simple math over at the redbull website. the new track is definitely a more peppy version of anything you’ve heard on mean everything, but it’s a good look for the summertime. come april 1st, there will be live footage of the band on the website as well, so be on the look out for that.

live album: janelle monae – killers, lasers and papers [full set] (2011)

31 03 2011

if you’re like us, you had hopes of getting into the killers, lasers and papers showcase at sxsw. originally slated to be lupe fiasco, cee-lo green and wiz khalifa, a sickness took lupe out and i’m sure sheer laziness took cee-lo out, who were then replaced by b.o.b. and janelle monae. i was definitely still bummed i didn’t get to see the show, but now we have a consolation prize. as the headliner, it’s definitely cool to see this – janelle’s full set from the showcase can now be downloaded for free. hit the jump for the tracklist and enjoy a live set from one of the best current performers.

mixtape: mateo – love & stadiums (2011)

30 03 2011

i’ve been waiting on this one. he does some of the best remixes i’ve ever heard, and even though a lot of these tracks are from his underneath the sky mixtape series, i’m looking forward to sitting down with what i haven’t heard.

and while we’re on the topic of old remixes, why wasn’t the “forever” rework thrown here? easily his best. tracklisting under the jump.

perfect. legendary detroit soul guitarist dennis coffey joins mayer hawthorne and the county perform a cover of parliament’s “all your goodies are gone,” with wonderful results. this cover, mayer hawthorne and all, will be on coffey’s upcoming album, dropping 4/26.

tyga – reminded (2011)

30 03 2011

what’s with all the adele sampling/covering lately? i’m not mad, it just seems out of nowhere. in the latest nod to the british songstress, tyga flips a line from “someone like you” for a downtrodden number about an ex-flame. this is due to be released on black thoughts 2, which is dropping sometime this summer, i believe.

introducing: dire dire docks (2011)

30 03 2011

we’ve recently come in contact with a rapper from the midwest, who, as unorthodox as it may seem, loves our blog. aside from flattering us (it always, always works, folks.), he presented us with 3D/dire dire docks (for all you super mario fans), his hip-hop project for the past few years. with two mixtapes under his belt, john barbee/3D has been engaged in the hustle of the up and coming emcee. this isn’t your typical ‘mac miller’ fare, as john so eloquently put it. on his latest venture, nintendope, he focuses on original production by himself and long time friend/collaborator bizzi, with plenty of technologically sound references for the nerdy rap fan and catchy hooks to boot.

be sure to grab his older mixtape, the chamber of silence vol. I (mainly freestyles over other artists’ beats), and his latest project below.

follow 3d on twitter.

video: lykke li – i follow rivers [live from the moon] (2011)

30 03 2011

ms. li continues to release performances from her set on the moon or whatever drug-induced promotional landscape she’s on right now. regardless, here’s the 2nd one in the series, “i follow rivers.” wounded rhymes is out now.

video: fleet foxes – grown ocean (2011)

30 03 2011

grainy road montages suit fleet foxes like an unkempt beard, and that’s exactly what the band has to offer for their new video for “grown ocean” off their forthcoming helplessness blues – the montage and beards, both.

video: jean grae – r.i.p. [f. talib kweli and styles p] (2011)

30 03 2011

from cookies or coma, jean’s latest project that should be released sometime this summer. i love this song, and having ski beatz produce anything is never a bad idea.

video: the pains of being pure at heart – heart in your heartbreak (2011)

30 03 2011

you know the employees of your local guitar center are probably the most talented musicians in the country, right? the pains of being pure at heart sure know this, as the group rock out their local music store in thrifty 80′s inspired regalia, performing “heart in your heartbreak” from their new album belong.

video: the mountain goats – this year [ft craig finn of the hold steady] (2011)

30 03 2011

hold steady frontman craig finn joined the mountain goats onstage for a performance of “this year” from the goats’ 2005 album the sunset tree and did that flappy-arm thing he does. the one where he’s way the fuck excited to be onstage in a relevant rock band … drunk. i would be too, craig.

video: theophilus london – why even try? (2011)

30 03 2011

theophilus gets his first major label music video dropped and premiered on mtv (assuming this is post-playing the mtv garage at sxsw!) and it’s a doozy. hang with mr. lvrs and get saturated in white light and paparazzi lighting and go jam lovers holiday in the meantime.

video: the niceguys – nice shorts vol. 8 [ever upward] (2011)

30 03 2011

very happy that the nice shorts series is back, if not only for the 8th installment. this one finds the guys in austin for sxsw, rockin’ an impromptu freestyle with some fellas while droppin’ a little product placement.

look out for some new music from the crew very soon.

video: danny mcbride – interview with letterman (2011)

29 03 2011

just because i love everything he does. especially now that i know that he loves the tv show cops.

i’m definitely looking forward to your highness, regardless of how terrible the premise. i mean how could a movie with kenny powers and james franco be bad?

lupe fiasco – who are you now [f. b.o.b.] (2011)

29 03 2011

you mean to tell me that lupe let go of an archived album track himself? maybe the tides are shifting. this one, while unfinished, is still a pretty cool collaboration from the ‘past my shades’ crew. lupe wanted a third verse from janelle monae, but that never came to fruition. that’ll do, lu.

video: mantis – dreamer (2011)

29 03 2011

danny ocean of evesborough films and nick greer/the mantis crew link up for another music video from the dreamer ep. this time, the title track (despite being a notch above 2 minutes) gets a visual that will knock you on your ass and take you back to the glory days of wrestling. what i’d give to see a “hardcore” match like the original tables, ladders and chairs match with the dudley boys, hardy boys and edge & christian. did i just bring back some awesome memories or what?!

mantis’ dreamers EP can be purchased on iTunes now. support that houston ish, yall.

hourglass sea – home again (2011)

29 03 2011

my man dean/the hourglass sea is back with a new song, that is to serve as the precursor to his upcoming 7-song ep. while “home again” will not be on it, it maintains the caliber of production and quality that you may have come to expect from the UK producer.

29 03 2011

barker enlists the game, lil wayne, swizz and ross for the lead single on his solo venture, which is in stores now. can’t vouch for the album, as i haven’t listened yet, but this video is definitely cool.

mixtape: weworemasks presents – last night was almost perfect (2011)

29 03 2011

so it’s the start of another week and probably a monday like the others. after a near perfect weekend, wanting a certain feeling to last, you get sucked back into the work/school week. i’ve never been one to ‘live for the weekend’, but after experiencing such a feeling recently, i decided to throw together a little something to soundtrack that vibe (in lieu of a march mixtape). naturally grizzly thought this was something that should be posted, hence the time. the download is below, tracklisting/back cover under the cut. enjoy ya’ll.
