stream: bon iver – bon iver (2011)

9 06 2011

it’s been a good three years since justin vernon’s disarming falsetto caressed our ears with the enchanting for emma, foerver ago. since then, vernon’s dipped a toe in hip hop, and even reformed his former band deyarmond edison to grace us all with their breathtaking americana soul.

out june 21st, the eponymous album bon iver, sees vernon taking a grander approach to his utterly disarming introspective songwriting. the arrangements are more lush, more vivid and always with that layered, buttercream falsetto we’ve all come to identify with vernon. check it out below, courtesy of npr.

stream: the mountain goats – all eternals deck (2011)

28 02 2011

to say all eternals deck is a more subdued mountain goats, john darnielle sounding more restrained than in recent releases, is to miss the point of the album entirely. darnielle’s provocative and highly literate lyrics have always been the driving force behind any of the mountain goats’ albums, every bit as reflective as they are intimate. to ahve the man explain it in his own words:

If you have ever watched say a 70s occult-scare movie where one of the scenes involves a couple of people visiting a storefront fortune teller, getting their cards read, and then trying to feel super-hopeful about what they hear when what they’re visibly actually feeling is dread, then you have a pretty decent idea of what the album is all about. If you know the feeling of exultation that comes with having recognized the oncoming train of fate, then that’s the other thing the album’s about.

stream the all eternals deck (due out march 29) over at npr (of course).
