throwback thursday: deftones – be quiet and drive (1997)

i’ve always loved the deftones. they were one of the few nu-metal bands at the time that this album came out that knew what the hell a melody was. around the fur was the first album i had heard from them, and i was about a year late, so i was the guy who had to go back and get adrenaline and all that fun stuff. this was one of the first songs i had heard in middle school that was extremely heavy without ever having to scream or find a breakdown and would eventually change the way i listened to rock music (for the 100th time, but still) as a whole.

i tried to go as far back with them as i could without hitting that nu-metal stride of songs like “bored” and “engine no. 9.” i really wanted to throw up a. the video for “digital bath” for the sole reason that houston’s skyline could be seen at the 1:28 mark (didn’t feel it was old enough) or b. this collaboration between incubus and adam sandler for “be quiet and drive” – so i’ve managed to cheat and include these as well.
