did as cities burn reunite? (2011)

i’ve been a huge fan of all three of this band’s albums, no matter how drastic the departure from the previous album. that being said, the group has started an “official” twitter, where they all but tell you they’re reunited. they’re asking band friends to give them a RT and spread the word for an impending announcement come september 9th. not only that, their avatar boasts the cover of the debut record, son i loved you at your darkest, which happens to be my personal favorite.

is tj coming back? are they touring? new album? either way, stay tuned and get excited.

stream: hawkboy – 2bit (2011)

swt. from the ashes of as cities burn came hellohighwater, who eventually went silent after those demos and emerged again as hawkboy. if cody bonnette is at the helm of the microphone stand, i’ll probably listen to it. their first single “2bit” can be heard at their facebook. and don’t worry, no need to sign up or “like” anything quite yet. shout out to BWC for the heads up.

weworemasks presents the best of as cities burn (2009)

so as a birthday present to me, as cities burn decided to break up. i won’t hold it against them, though. it’s been a long time coming and i’m surprised to actually see a third release from them.

in any case, i’m sure a lot of you didn’t listen to them or get into them, whether it be the fact that they were pretty heavy and screamed on the first record, their record label affiliation, etc. however, as cities burn were one of the few bands who constantly progressed and who remained consistent in making good music.

son, i loved you at your darkest remains as one of my favorite heavy albums of all time. everything about it was raw and gritty and the best way i could describe the songs would be if mewithoutyou met botch. it’s still my favorite as cities burn album, due to songs like “admission: regret” and “of want and misery,” for example’s sake.

eventually, tj would leave the band, and they broke up. but not for long after decided the dudes wanted to keep the name and continue making music, however different it may be. come now sleep threw a lot of people off guard and a lot of people (myself included) tossed it out the window. i’d keep going back to it though and realized that it was just a more guitar driven rock-sound and it began to grow on me.

there were a couple of songs i could do without, but the band nailed it the third time around with hell or high water, which came out earlier this year. the intricate guitars coupled with cody bonnette’s voice were an incredible combination. they also embraced their southern influences, being from louisiana and all. hell or high water is going to be ranked fairly high on my year-end lists, for the record.

to sum up, i’ll miss this band. they were good at everything they did. i put together a personal interpretation of their greatest hits, which you can download after the jump. it was painstakingly hard to cut songs like “tides” and “wake dead man, wake” from the final list, but i tried to limit myself to 5-6 songs from each albums, clocking in at about 24 minutes per album.

hit the jump and enjoy.

as cities burn – hell or high water (2009)

this band is not what they used to be, but i’m not complaining. i’ve been listening to this album for the past few days, and i’m loving every minute of it. it’s a bit early to tell, but for now, it’s in my top three of 09. it’s highly doubtful that it’ll stay there, but they’ll have a hell of a run. you can listen to their entire album over at aol music, so don’t sleep.

as cities burn – ’84 sheepdog (2009)

so i’m sure most fans of the band who decided it’d be a good idea to download the dripped version of “hell or high water” last night soon found out that it was a clever april fool’s joke. not only was this the sole member of the “i fooled grizzly” club, but it was a good one. the first song was their own (’84 sheepdog), the second and third were just flat out weird instrumental/sped up tracks, and the rest was alien ant farm. anyway, album’s out in a few weeks. sit tight.

regardless, ’84 sheepdog is the first official song from the album, and it features tj bonnette, acb’s original vocalist. this album is sure to be lovely.
