The Faint are one of the biggest pioneers of the post-punk explosion of the 2000s, and with good and obvious reason. Records like Blank Wave Arcade and Danse Macabre ushered in new sounds and new waves (heh) of electronic music blended seamlessly with punk rock and indie, bringing together diverse crowds cross country in the process. And all of this from a band that originated in the heart of Saddle Creek, Omaha, Nebraska. After 2008′s Fasciinatiion, the band took to their own respective musical routes, quietly performing with side-act Depressed Buttons and DJ sets alike, leaving The Faint on a bit of a self-imposed hiatus.
Saddle Creek decided it was time for a reissue for one of the aforementioned records, Danse Macabre, which is 11 years old as of August 2012. And what better time for the band to hit a practice studio, refine their live show and take this behemoth of an album out on the road, performing it in its entirety for a full scale US tour (with a stop in our neighboring city of Austin, TX)?
after all the hullabaloo and esoteric clips revealing their 2012 lineup, austin’s fun fun fun fest, the better of the two major fall music festivals native to the live music capital of the world, have released their 3 day schedule of bands, comedy acts, and taco-cannon antics.
check out all the set times at the link below, which thankfully includes a list of all the free fun to be had at the fun fun fun fest nites, admission free with wristband. all the fun fun fun begins on nov 2-4. god bless you austin, and all your freebie weirdness. tickets are still available here.
get the lube out, ya’ll. fun fun fun fest just ‘unleashed the beast’ of their 2012 lineup, and it’s a doozy. first off, REFUSED ARE NOT FUCKING DEAD. then somewhere along the lines, god damn de la soul, there’s a run dmc reunion, against me!, turbonegro, converge, hannibal burress, a shit ton of other awesome bands, some good rappers, great comedians and much more.
reunions are nothing new to austin’s fun fun fun fest, and after teasing their lineup with obscure 80′s workout videos, a proper (and very cool) announcement was made today that run-d.m.c. will be performing at the auditorium shores. this will be the group’s first performance since jam master jay died in 2002.
run-d.m.c. will be joining the already announced atlas sound, baroness, danny brown, rakim, bob mould, against me!, black moth super rainbow, david cross and more on november 2nd-4th. expect a full lineup announcement on thursday.
Day Three of Fun Fun Fun Fest wraps up one of it’s biggest years in its six-year existence with one of the most exceptional and legendary bands to grace our presence: Slayer. But not before Auditorium Shores is filled with electronic, indie, and punk acts to help stifle the brutal blow. Hit the jump to catch write-ups on everyone from Grimes, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Mates of State and of course, Slayer.
With day one of Fun Fun Fun Fest in the can, Austinites once again braved the dust bowl that was Auditorium Shores, faces wrapped with bandanas to guard from the elements and with a hunger for more live music. From Swedish import Lykke Li to Austin backyarders Spoon, Saturday boasted one of the strongest lineups the festival has ever seen.
Austin, Texas’s Fun Fun Fun Fest has come quite a long way from its humble beginnings six years ago. From its first year at Waterloo Park with a bill comprised heavily of local acts like Black Angels, Spoon and Ghostland Observatory, the festival has ballooned into a nationally recognized music-fest capable of reuniting acts like The Descendents, booking stadium sized bands like Slayer, and drawing crowds that would rival its big-brother festival Austin City Limits. Now with a new seaside home at Auditorium Shores, the sixth annual Fun Fun Fun Fest has its sights set higher than ever, with the most impressive bill its seen in years.
This time of the year is always pretty hectic. Between not paying for badges and getting into half of the shows we wanted to, getting drunk and finding free shit, SXSW can be a pretty pressing time. Luckily, we don’t complain that much. We threw up a mixtape prior to the event, but in any case, this recap will be quick and to the point. You’ll find each day broken down into who and what we saw, accompanied by blurbs written by Sunbear and I — all will be marked for your convenience.
You’ll also find some photos we took, many from Sunbear’s Instagram binge and some from my shitty point and shoot. Enjoy!
it’s that time of the year, folks. sxsw is upon us, and we’re quite aware that you can’t join all of the festivities. thankfully, the people at fader and fiat are back again this year with full video streaming coverage of the fader fort and all that it entails. over the course of the next four days, you can catch sets from a bunch of notable artists, including but not limited to:
ellie goulding, raphael saadiq (today at 6!), matt & kim, the cool kids, wiz khalifa, smith westerns, currensy, and so on. and for all you people who like douchebag rap, the likes of odd future, lil b, yelawolf and mac miller all have sets as well. for the full lineup, hit the jump.
the dust bowl known as austin’s fun fun fun fest continued with it’s final day and biggest achievement to date, the reunion of the illustrious punk band, the descendents. stepping up when an injury sidelined planned headliners devo, the legendary west coast punk band set out for austin for their first live show in nearly a decade, causing a stir amongst festival goers. this once in a lifetime act would be joining the likes of best coast, deerhunter, p.o.s., mastadon, suicideal tendencies, yelle and more for the final day of fun fun fun fest.
Fun Fun Fun Fest once again descended upon Austin, Texas for its 2010 edition, corralling the best of crust-punk, pretentious indie, left field hip-hop, stoner-metal, and whatever else kind of music would draw the mases to the ten acre Waterloo Park for a three-day marathon of live-music, mosh-pitting, and binge drinking. this year, the festival featured it’s widest array of artists than any previous, from weird al to gwar, there was something for everyone. weworemasks’ sunbear was on hand to partake of said festivities, and the following is his recollection, as best he remembers it, of Austin’s 5th annual Fun Fun Fun Fest.
editor’s note: sorry about the extreme late pass here people, i could tell you that i’ve been busy with other things, but truthfully i was recovering from the two day ordeal that was the fest.
i’m sure many of you missed big sean on his college tour. here’s a recap of his event in austin, including the in-store, backstage and all that good shit. he did a real cool thing with the meet and greets in each city, so definitely gotta give it up to him for putting that hard work back into his fanbase. boi.
so to keep it brief, all three of the bears got to see mayer hawthorne & the county destroy all three of texas’ most tour capable cities. panda caught them in dallas (recap coming very soon), grizzly and sunbear caught the houston show and all three of us would catch him again in austin during sxsw. needless to say, it was a great 3-day stint filled with soul, dancing and a lot of booze. up top is a video of the county’s take on n.e.r.d’s “fly or die,” an obvious highlight of the night.
below the cut, you’ll find three more videos of “just ain’t gonna work out,” “make her mine” and “green-eyed love.”
alright ya’ll, we’re headed to austin tomorrow morning. be sure you holler at your three favorite bears if you happen to be in austin for the weekend (hit up the contact page for email/aim/etc), and if you need a haircut on sunday, i’ll be cutting hair to make up for the income i’m missing by leaving work to get drunk and see some music with my two favorite bears in austin. you could also consider it preemptive bail money.
in the meantime, expect the posts to be more sparse than usual. however, we will be very much so updating any of our followers on the wwm twitter, so be sure you’re following us @weworemasks. also expect the usual videos, stories, embarrassing/incriminating photos to surface upon our triumphant returns to our respective homes.
since grizzly is an unemployed piece of shit again, he has all the time in the world. so he’s been nice/bored enough to put together another mix of sxsw hopefuls and probables. enjoy the tape while we’re gone. tracklist and download after the cut.
