show recap: fun fun fun fest [day one] (november 4, 2011)

7 11 2011

photos by a.j. gutierrez; above: Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears

Austin, Texas’s Fun Fun Fun Fest has come quite a long way from its humble beginnings six years ago. From its first year at Waterloo Park with a bill comprised heavily of local acts like Black Angels, Spoon and Ghostland Observatory, the festival has ballooned into a nationally recognized music-fest capable of reuniting acts like The Descendents, booking stadium sized bands like Slayer, and drawing crowds that would rival its big-brother festival Austin City Limits. Now with a new seaside home at Auditorium Shores, the sixth annual Fun Fun Fun Fest has its sights set higher than ever, with the most impressive bill its seen in years.

fun fun fun fest lineup revealed (2011)

1 08 2011

click here for full sized flyer.

with austin’s always lovely fun fun fun fest lineup revealed, everyone’s shittin’ their pants in anticipation. for the first time in its residency, it will:

a. be 3 days long, as opposed to 2
b. be hosted by the auditorium shores, as opposed to the dogshit waterloo park
c. have slayer playing

sunbear and i will probably be there, passed out in the grassy knoll from smuggling in vodka and roofies (for each other, obviously) in water bottles.

show recap: SXSW (2011)

22 03 2011

This time of the year is always pretty hectic. Between not paying for badges and getting into half of the shows we wanted to, getting drunk and finding free shit, SXSW can be a pretty pressing time. Luckily, we don’t complain that much. We threw up a mixtape prior to the event, but in any case, this recap will be quick and to the point. You’ll find each day broken down into who and what we saw, accompanied by blurbs written by Sunbear and I — all will be marked for your convenience.

You’ll also find some photos we took, many from Sunbear’s Instagram binge and some from my shitty point and shoot. Enjoy!

show recap: fun fun fun fest [day two] (2010)

20 11 2010

the dust bowl known as austin’s fun fun fun fest continued with it’s final day and biggest achievement to date, the reunion of the illustrious punk band, the descendents. stepping up when an injury sidelined planned headliners devo, the legendary west coast punk band set out for austin for their first live show in nearly a decade, causing a stir amongst festival goers. this once in a lifetime act would be joining the likes of best coast, deerhunter, p.o.s., mastadon, suicideal tendencies, yelle and more for the final day of fun fun fun fest.

show recap: fun fun fun fest [day one] (2010)

14 11 2010

Fun Fun Fun Fest once again descended upon Austin, Texas for its 2010 edition, corralling the best of crust-punk, pretentious indie, left field hip-hop, stoner-metal, and whatever else kind of music would draw the mases to the ten acre Waterloo Park for a three-day marathon of live-music, mosh-pitting, and binge drinking. this year, the festival featured it’s widest array of artists than any previous, from weird al to gwar, there was something for everyone. weworemasks’ sunbear was on hand to partake of said festivities, and the following is his recollection, as best he remembers it, of Austin’s 5th annual Fun Fun Fun Fest.

editor’s note: sorry about the extreme late pass here people, i could tell you that i’ve been busy with other things, but truthfully i was recovering from the two day ordeal that was the fest.

video: mayer hawthorne – live in houston, tx (2010)

25 03 2010

so to keep it brief, all three of the bears got to see mayer hawthorne & the county destroy all three of texas’ most tour capable cities. panda caught them in dallas (recap coming very soon), grizzly and sunbear caught the houston show and all three of us would catch him again in austin during sxsw. needless to say, it was a great 3-day stint filled with soul, dancing and a lot of booze. up top is a video of the county’s take on n.e.r.d’s “fly or die,” an obvious highlight of the night.

below the cut, you’ll find three more videos of “just ain’t gonna work out,” “make her mine” and “green-eyed love.”

mixtape: weworemasks x sxsw (2010)

18 03 2010

alright ya’ll, we’re headed to austin tomorrow morning. be sure you holler at your three favorite bears if you happen to be in austin for the weekend (hit up the contact page for email/aim/etc), and if you need a haircut on sunday, i’ll be cutting hair to make up for the income i’m missing by leaving work to get drunk and see some music with my two favorite bears in austin. you could also consider it preemptive bail money.

in the meantime, expect the posts to be more sparse than usual. however, we will be very much so updating any of our followers on the wwm twitter, so be sure you’re following us @weworemasks. also expect the usual videos, stories, embarrassing/incriminating photos to surface upon our triumphant returns to our respective homes.

since grizzly is an unemployed piece of shit again, he has all the time in the world. so he’s been nice/bored enough to put together another mix of sxsw hopefuls and probables. enjoy the tape while we’re gone. tracklist and download after the cut.

we love you and want to touch you in places,

- panda c/o the bears

bootleg: glassJAw – live at emo’s austin [full audio mp3] (march 4, 2010)

6 03 2010

below this post, you will find my show recap. enlighten me. anyway, weworemasks’ friend jay has followed up his brand new bootleg (our site’s highest viewed page, mind you) with a full audio set of glassjaw’s show from earlier this week in austin, texas.

i will say that two of the files were corrupted, so “ape dos mil” and “pretty lush” are unfortunately missing from the set. however, we do have some very solid recordings of newer glassjaw material like “jesus glue,” “natural born farmer” and a completely new and untitled song that kicked off the set.

enjoy and leave us feedback. tracklisting is after the jump.

video: j. cole – live in austin, texas (2010)

3 02 2010

good lord, this man needs to be hyped WAY more. some dope quality footage of j. cole performing 3 of my favorite tracks this past sunday in austin. he speaks a little bit about his texas trip, then runs through “dead presidents”, “world is mine” (LEE FIELDS!), and “last call” freestyle.

show recap: fun fun fun fest [day two] (2009)

3 12 2009

and here we go with day two coverage of austin’s fourth annual fun fun fun fest. sunday was marred by every outdoor festival’s enemy: rain. and even worse: inches upon cakey inches of mud. did the bands play on despite the weather? could austin’s hippie-centric crowd keep from indulgling in the mud-fest? hit the jump, kind readers of wwm, and slake your curiosity.

fun fun fun fest lineup announced (2009)

25 08 2009

this lineup is looking something mean. much more cohesive and entertaining than last year’s lineup. looking forward to a lot of things this year and i’m sure you can figure out which bear is stoked out about which band. panda probably won’t attend because he doesn’t do the sun and anything that doesn’t have the all-day availability of vodka.

more info at the official website.

see you in austin on november 8+9.

video: kid cudi, 88 keys and hi-tek at sxsw

4 04 2009

nice little interview cudi did on the streets of austin. cudi talks about keeping it real with himself despite his status and loses his shit when he spots fellow buckeye dj hi-tek. funny to see him go from solemn face to cheesin like crazy when hi-tek shows up (“yo! is the camera still rollin’?!?”). he also talks about the public response to ‘day n nite’ and drops some infor on his new album and the video for ‘sky might fall’. life is good: retiring should have been the last thing on his mind.

…and you will know us by the trail of dead – the century of self (2009)

17 02 2009

one of austin, tx’s finest bands id dropping their sixth studio album this coming tuesday, and since i probably won’t get around to reviewing it, i figure i’d at least promote it a bit. the entire things streaming for free over at spinner, so head over there and jam the shit out of it. i’ve heard a little over half of the album, and it sounds great. if you ever get a chance to see them perform, do so.

now’s also as good a week as ever to brush up on their discography if you’re into em, especially sources, tags and codes.
