donald glover makes his TV debut (as a performer) to knock out a set of a heavily edited “bonfire” for the fallon masses. and even though his band is incredible, i wonder why he didn’t perform with the roots. frown face.
count on donald glover to do something original in his music video for “bonfire.” i’m not the most thrilled on this song as a single, especially since it’s following its counterpart “freaks and geeks,” but gambino makes it work for him in the “summer camp thriller.” camp is out november 15th.
have no clue who matt simpson is, but his vimeo account is in position of two studio recordings of two new childish gambino cuts, including the newest single, “bonfire.” “all the shine” was previously “untitled” on some live video we posted. worth mentioning (or hearing) is how this band sounds live, which makes me automatically think back to the iamdonald tour and how much fun it was.
let’s get two things clear: i’m very excited that plenty of people caught on to gambino’s excellent rap repertoire within the last year, namely due to EP and the success of “freaks and geeks.” i’m not excited that these same people are willing to worship every song that comes out of his camp (heh heh) blindly. sure “bonfire” is a great track when it stands alone. it’s got the trademark wit, punchlines and pop culture references – but this is clearly “freaks and geeks” part 2.
i definitely like and fucks with this song, but i want a lot more with camp. until then, enjoy a stream of bonfire before it hits itunes tomorrow.
i know i’m reaching, but i can barely contain my excitement for this record. NPR did a feature on a ‘what’s what’ of music this coming fall, and previewed gambino’s new album, camp, which has been recently pushed back to november 15th. head to the link below, listen to the entire feature OR skip to the 19:55 mark and enjoy yourself.
“bonfire” should’ve been the first single off the album and eventually should’ve lead in to the mid summer release date for ursa major. but hey, i’m no marketing executive over at sony. i’m a huge fan of this band and this song especially. the video is basically one giant summer party i was never cool enough to be a part of. i mean, most of my summer parties involved dancing in bear costumes with my brethren after a 4 hour vodka binge. i guess those are pretty cool, too.
edit: video is auto-play, so catch it below the jump.
i think i’ll actually embrace my inner adolescent and see this band live one day. here they are performing my personal favorite off the new album, bonfire. nothing spectacular, as it sounds a lot like the album version, but it’s still enjoyable.
