two of the front-runners for the grammy category for best alternative music album, guested on steven’s colbert reprort to present their case as to why they deserve the conservative vote. the game? who whored their music out to big business the most.
and when all doesn’t end fairly, it’s time to break out the bats and chains.
for his annual bbc new year’s hootenanny, jools holland rung in 2011 with the likes of cee lo green, vampire weekend, wanda turner and many more backed with his rhythm and blues orchestra. check out videos of green throwing down “i want you,” “forget you,” and “reet petite” as well as vampy weeks dishing out “run,” “holiday,” and “cousins,” all below the jump.
In Houston, the days leading up to Austin’s gigantic Austin City Limits Festival is known as the “ACL Runoff,” where bands traveling towards the “Music Capital of the World” take pity on poor Houstonians and pay them their dues: kind of like dropping in on your parent’s on your way to spring break in Cancun. All in one evening, Houston saw Local Natives, The Gaslight Anthem and Vampire Weekend headline separate venues, creating a veritable Sophie’s Choice for all of H-Town’s music loving hipsters. The scholarly boys of Vampire Weekend University had never once steeped foot upon Houston soil, to the point that we were beginning to wonder what kind of grudge they bore upon our fair city. Turns out, none, as they brought their preppy, boat shoe-wearing indie pop to a packed house at Houston’s Verizon Wireless Theater.
VW stopped by the colbert report to find out that someone does give a fuck about an oxford comma. i can’t even express how much i loved the fact that colbert pulled out the elements of style during the interview. that’s a book that i can say that i’ve spent enough time with in my college years. they also played ‘holiday’ and stuff, which you can see down under.
another music video from contra, albeit a good marketing tool, seems fruitless after the utter awesomeness of the clip for ‘giving up the gun,’ which is still getting youtube clicks from me on a weekly basis. every vampire weekend video should feature a visibly hammered jake gylenhall and a rude joe jonas. i’m just sayin’.
awwww naw. we’re not done posting the hell out of everything hoobastank vampire weekend (only makes sense if you watched the episode) touches. the new york boys stopped by the snl studios yet again for two flawless* performances of contra standouts. above is “cousins,” and below the cut is “giving up the gun.”
enlisting a hodgepodge of celebs to throw down the most epic tennis match ever (joe jonas, jake gyllenhaal, rza, lil’ jon) vampire weekend unveil their new video for contra track “giving up the gun”. joe is snotty, donnie darko is a drunkard, rza line-judges as the matrix’s neo, and lil jon, he always tells the truth (sometimes en français). oh and that’s vampire weekend’s lil sweetheart of a friend jenny murray kicking some serious ass.
yeah, buddy. we ain’t sick of hearing vampire weekend quite yet over here. the lovely blogotheque people have a full acoustic v-dubs performance from their soirée de poche series, which i believe translates to “whale’s vagina” in german. you can also check out some great past performances here. grab a contra get your cousin on!
also, watch ezra stumble his way though the french language. so cute!
i promise, it’ll start to die down now. contra’s in stores today and here are two of itunes finest b-sides. i’m literally guaranteeing the fact that those apple bastards will have this shit taken down with 48 hours, so hop to.
download [usershare was being an asshole, limelinx for now]:
sick of hearing these guys yet? that means you prematurely downloaded the album leak of contra. shame on you. rotsam’s got keffiyehs to buy and ezra’s got stylists to be paid. give these guys a break. if you haven’t already listened to the album, mtv’s offering up their unplugged series with the boys performing 3 contra tracks and 3 oldies but goodies. “a-punk” is up above and the rest can be viewed by moseying over to mtv’s site or hitting the link below. yeah, they’ve got that string quartet for “m79″ and yeah, ezra’s pretty darn cute. damn that floppy hair of his.
yes, more vampire weekend. the boys stop by pitchfork’s own juan’s basement and do live renditions of songs from contra. extra points for these sessions especially for featuring a great live version of “horchata.”
peep the interview tidbits, credits and other videos of “cousins,” “california english” and “white sky” all over at p4k tv.
if you aren’t a vampire weekend fan (hi, panda) then i apologize for the plethora of posts that you will see in the coming weeks. with contra coming out next tuesday and the endless hype train taking course, there’s gonna be more and more shit as the nyc boys make their rounds around the networks and such.
great performance of the lead single on letterman, completely on point. but two complaints: ezra needs a smaller guitar and this performance needs moar confetti.
you either loved or hated vampire weekend’s eponymous debut album from 2008, so this should be a no-brainer either way. i personally loved it, so i’m looking forward to diving into contra with my glass of ironic wine and a completely sensible cardigan sweater. just kidding. i am a huge fan of “horchata” and “cousins,” so the rest of this should fly by with ease.
