so, as the weworemasks crew of houston (and possibly dallas, pending) prepares to see fang island in all of their glory this coming week, the fine folks at insound have put together a three-song session with the brooklyn group. the band dropped by and performed “daisy,” “davey crockett” and “dreams of dreams.” the latter two can be seen below the jump.

if you haven’t picked up their self-titled yet, then do so promptly.

thanks!

fang island – daytrotter sessions (2010)

in what seems like an effort to give every fang island fan blue balls, the group stopped by the daytrotter studios to knock out a sesh, but managed to only blaze two songs. two songs?! C’MON! in other news, the houston bears just learned of a possibility of a free fang island show at the house of blues in late may.

…and release.

the sargent house twitter feed was constantly abuzz with how great nyc signees fand island were. one crazy video later, featuring president’s of past as well as fanny pack wearing dirty dancers, i’m under the spell of the frenetic power pop band. in a mere 4 minutes, the islander’s offer more blissful variations in a single song than most bands do in an entire album. heady stuff for such a young band.

first off, if you haven’t read my review, go do that. now that i know you ignored the link, you can keep reading. a few days ago, thrice came into town with brand new and a good friend of mine used the most badass of audio recorders to get mp3 footage of the entire show. here’s thrice’s set in it’s entirety. you can view the tracklisting/setlist after the jump.

many thanks to jay for the recordings.

video: brand new – bought a bride [daisy sessions] (2009)

i’m glad i’m coming around a lot on this album. there’s still about four songs i can’t listen to because they suck, but the rest of em, including ‘bought a bride,’ are ace. these daisy sessions just about make my day every time i hear em. between the new version of ‘jesus,’ acoustic version of ‘sowing season’ and just about every daisy track sounding infinitely better on here, it’s a must grab.

show recap: brand new + thrice (october 31, 2009)

back in 2007, brand new and thrice teamed up for a joint tour and minds were blown. so when it came down to brand new’s headlining tour for daisy, i wasn’t surprised to see thrice on it for another jaunt. the two pair up finely, and held up each other on a certain pedestal of expectation when it came down to the actual performance aspect. i caught two nights in a row and call me partial to thrice, but they outshined brand new on both nights.

what made me even more excited about this tour stop was the fact that it was halloween. now the days of my youth are a bit hazy now, but i think it’s safe to say that there has never been a better halloween show in houston.

BONUS: a good friend of mine had a professional recorder and recorded the sets of thrice and brand new. hopefully they turned out great, so stay tuned for those. i’ll be posting them as soon as i get em.

recap after the jump.

album review: brand new – daisy (2009)

brand new is one of the few bands that have stuck with me through that whole ‘scene’ explosion of the 2001s and 2002s. they’ve been consistently impressive and months ago, i would’ve sworn on the fact that jesse lacey was like a lurker shadow of mine who was writing my autobiography. 2006′s the devil and god couldn’t have hit me at a more perfect time. that album has since become my favorite brand new record (to the dismay of many, i’m sure).

however, daisy is a disappointment. it’s scatterbrained and lyrically just doesn’t sit with me whatsoever. i had a hard time relating to a good amount of it and after two listens, i was left uninspired and bored with it. after finally deciding to review it, i ended up spinning it about 8 more times in the process, a lot of it began to grow on me. that being said, it still isn’t the brand new album i was waiting 3 years for.

review after the jump.

another brand new video from the daisy sessions. this time it’s to make the modest mouse influence even more apparent in ‘at the bottom.’ i’m gonna try to review daisy at some point. i just have a hard time sitting down with a record that heavily disappointed me the first two listens. i do like this song, though.

we’ll see.

video: brand new – jesus f. kevin devine (2009)

this is incredible. i would love to have mp3s of the daisy sessions (check sowing season here.) but could do without the interview bits in between. also, i’d like to just say that this is pretty much kevin devine’s take on ‘jesus,’ solely based off of the guitar parts.

i wish daisy wasn’t such a disappointment, but these will make up for a lot of it.

edit: thanks to tice for the heads up. i got a hold of all of the mp3s and zipped them up for you.

1. interview
2. sowing season
3. bought a bride

brand new – at the bottom [HQ added] (2009)

here’s the first of what’s to be many, many posts on the promo run to brand new’s ridiculously anticipated album, daisy. the first single hit the radio a couple of hours ago and radio rips have begun to hit the webs shortly thereafter.

i’ve only listened to it once, and while i like the song a good amount, it doesn’t hold up to anything on the devil and god. looking forward to hearing a lot more about this album in the near future. i’ll repost this when the official single leaks. what does everyone think?

daisy is in stores september 22.

brand new – live at northstar bar 7.10.09 (2009)

the good folks at b-sides r us got their hands on a bootleg of a brand new show that took place this past friday. i must say this set list is chock full of your favorite weapon nostalgia, so if you’ve been longing to hear these songs in their most current state, be sure to check this out.

not to mention, there’s a cover of neutral milk hotel’s “oh comely,” weezer’s “el scorcho” and some true gems like “flying at tree level” and the audio of some of the new songs.

setlist/info and the download of the entire set can be found here.

in related brand new news (ha), the band announced a september 22 release date for their unbelievably anticipated album, titled daisy. can’t say that i’m excited about the title much, but i’m sure the album will deliver.

also, hit the jump for a video of a new song tentatively titled “lay here on the bed.”
