“unorthodox” remains as one of my favorite hip-hop songs to come out this year. i mean with dj premier and joey on the same track, how could it not? creative control takes exactly that over the new video, giving joey a fancy visual to be paired with a
a few days ago, we were treated to the radio rip, and now green label sound releases the full CDQ version of one of the early frontrunners for best track of the year. “unorthodox” finds joey badass in the zone, honed in on premier’s classically fantastic production. turn the bass up.
put it this way: joey badass was born in 1995 and has already worked with dj premier. what the fuck are you doing with your life? jokes aside, “unorthodox” finds the 17-year-old phenom collaborating with one of the greatest and most respected hip-hop producers of all time – quite the cosign to say the least. premiered on the radio (this is a rip), but will be dropping this coming monday via mountain dew’s green label sound.
the always thorough and great DJ premier stopped by nashville to perform a set deemed ‘the boom bap’ for around two hours – and we’re all better off for it. the internet powers that be took the first hour from the soundboard and cleaned it up, only to unleash it upon us all. listen/download below.
the folks behind nas’ historic SXSW show has brought the losers who got shut out of the show nice, high quality video streams of the show. it includes the bulk of illmatic, as well as other songs like “made you look” and what have ya. watch at the vevo channel.
remember this trailer from a while back? in case you don’t, re: generation is a project by hyundai of all companies, putting up an assortment of 5 djs (including preemo, skrillex, crystal method, pretty lights and mark ronson) with the likes of some unlikely artists. they’re offering up a free download of the soundtrack, in preparation for the films release in select theaters on february 16th. more info here.
this is exactly as incredible as that subject leads you to believe. as a part of the re:generation project, hyundai (the showrunner here) links artists up with other artists and the berklee symphony orchestra to recreate traditional styles of music. (more info on the series here.) in any case, nas shows up and joins the fun too.
with his new album, success is certain, dropping tomorrow – royce is gearing up for all of his release parties and what not. but in the interim, why not enjoy a dj premier remix of an already dope song?
just ran across this today. yesterday marked the one year passing of the late keith elam, better known as guru. as his partner in rhyme, preemo dropped a nice, lengthy 2 hour mix at the house of funk flex last night. r.i.p. to guru, and enjoy the listen.
not the most avid reks listener outside of a few cuts, but this shit is incredible. preemo beat, great video, illmatic samples. what the hell else does a hip-hop cut need? this track is the lead single off of his album R.E.K.S., which is out march 8th. the record will have production from preemo, pete rock, hi tek, alchemist, nottz and sean c and lv, so now is the time to stop sleepin on this cat.
with its retail locations closing, fat beats had a slew of guests on hand to give it the bon voyage it deserved. this past week, both preemo and a-trak were in store to dabble on the 1s and 2s for the fans, and peter rosenberg was there to grab some footage. preemo up top (parts two and three here.) a-trak’s after the cut.
