it’s been a good long 5 years since a new album from the strokes. even longer since we’ve heard the oft-imitated strokes sound of yore. “under cover of darkness,” the new track from the new york garage pioneers’ forthcoming album angels (out march 22, or so says valensi) is a call-back to those is this it days, a bouncy guitar-driven track that combines the best of 70′s analog recordings with casablancas’ familiar pabst blue voice.

the super duo jenny lewis and johnathan rice do what you’d assume most adorbz couples do: frolic about and blow eachother all manner of kisses. and then there’s the blood. a lot of it. enough to write on the walls with. check out the bloody good time in the “big wave” video from the duo’s i’m having fun now.

2010, come back to me so i can indulge in this overlooked gem of an album. spain’s crystal fighters share a french label with bloc party, hot chip and the whitest boy alive and play a carefree kind of, and i don’t use this word often, folktronica. check out their sweet and springlike video for “at home,” off their debut star of love above.

performing “conversation 16″ from their fantastic album high violet, the national brought with them arcade fire’s richard reed perry on 3rd guitar too add to their melodious melancholia. i love the line “i was afraid i’d eat your brains” a concern i’m sure everyone can sympathize with.

bye bye lyrics video. r.e.m.’s got an actual moving vid for their collapse into now track “mine smell like honey.” the clip plays like a flipbook with stipe doing his best prone position as he’s tossed up a flight of stairs.

matthew vasquez of middle brother fame has a full time project called the delta spirit apparently. joke. the san diegans (or is it san diego-ites?) brought their song “white table” from their album history from below to jimmy kimmel live. the track ticks gently at first, then mushrooms into a percussive a-bomb. watch them explode all over the jimmy kimmel: live stage up above.

from streaking through times square to the unhinged fisticuffs in their new clip, matt & kim sure know how to make entertaining videos. for the video for “cameras,” from last year’s sidewalks the duo let their violent side take over and have at each other brandishing anything at arm’s reach in their rehearsal space. this a neat bit with a kick-drum pedal at 2:04.
this might be the best close-quarters fight since uma thurman and daryl hannah’s in kill bill 2.

the mountain goats are set to release the decidedly dark all eternals deck on march 29. inspired by 70′s occult-scare movies, john darnielle was asked on his message board if it would “be easier to write an album of love songs,” to which the songwriter replied “probably, i would not know, my focus is mainly death scenes and downtown portland” sure thing, buddy.

crazy cat-lady bethany cosentino haz a huge obsession with her cat, teh infamous “snacks.” he graces the cover of her album and is almost synonymous with the band. for the new video for “crazy for you,” snacks calls in reinforcements to create what is possibly teh cutest lolcat video known to man. the paws are my favorite little touch.

the always nattily dressed mike ness and social distortion swung by conan o’brien to perform their lead single “machine gun blues” from their new album hard times and nursery rhymes, which was just released yesterday. in those braces, fat tie, and fedora, i don’t doubt for a second that ness is a “gangster – 1934.”

the project that arcade fire and spike jonze were collaborating on has bolstered into a full-blown short film entitled scenes from the suburbs and will premiere next month at the berlin film festival. win butler described the project as a “science-fiction B-movie companion piece” to the band’s latest album.
in this short but emotional clip, set to the title song, a group or suburban ragtags on two-wheelers play out an picturesque adolescent summer, oblivious to the ever encroaching proximity of the military until their lives turn to sheer anarchy.

in case you didn’t know, crystal castles’ robert smith featured “not in love” off their second self-titled album is actually a cover song originally performed by 1980′s new wave band platinum blonde, the members of which were actually dirty blonde. anyway, up above is the new video for the track.

the new video for cold war kids’ “louder than ever” off the upcoming mine is yours (jan 24) plays like dream come true for an undiscovered beauty destined for the catwalk. at the expense of being severed from her boyfriend, a demure damsel is put through the fashion wringer to become a stunning looker. yeah, there’s shots of the band, but really my focus was on the brunette with the cheekbones. and how!

french electro-pop darling (i can stop there can’t i?) yelle is back with a new album, sarfari disco club due out march 21 and if the title track is any indication, it’s going to be another silly good time. i’d brush up on my french if i ever had a lesson, but that doesn’t detract from the playful absurdity of the song, which actually does sound like a safari disco club.

cool guy/dj rjd2 has just made available an ep titled the glow remixes, which remixes, you guessed it, songs from “the glow,” off of 2010′s the colossus. the cuts come courtesy of flosstradamus, paolo, and candy panther. haven’t heard of the latter two? that’s okay. they’re both young upstarts hand selected by rjd2 himself. enjoy.
