show recap: converge (november 3, 2012)

After plans of seeing Converge perform at Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest fell through, our contingency plan was put in place. And it wasn’t too shabby – seeing a band we’ve been a fan of for years perform in an intimate setting (Fitzgeralds, Houston, TX) to a dedicated fan base sounded like a pretty good way to spend a Saturday night. Converge was on a full scale headline tour with Miami’s Torche and Norwegian metal outfit Kvelertak, supporting their brand-spankin’ new album All We Love We Leave Behind, which is a follow-up to 2009′s Axe to Fall. The band hasn’t hit Houston since 2009, and the thrill of seeing them for the first time is enough to build anticipation for what ended up being one of the best shows we’ve seen all year.

show recap: the walkmen + milo greene (september 22, 2012)

photos by weworemasks

The Walkmen’s Hamilton Leithauser has got one great big blustery voice – a robust howl so striking and sonorous, it threatened to drown out the eardrums of the overly packed Fitzerald’s crowd last Friday evening. And what a diverse Houston crowd there was in attendance – from the hipster mainstays whose bathroom graffiti had long since been painted over by the venue’s posh makeover, to your beer-guzzling jocks, whose excess of front-facing camera photo opps exposed their greenness to the whole concert-going experience, a whole spectrum of Houstonian stereotypes saved the date and joined in for what was one of the most face-melting, eardrum-ringing shows in recent memory.

show recap: father john misty + har mar superstar (april 24, 2012)

A pair of Tillmans came on through Fitzgerald’s last night: Joshua Tillman, former Fleet Fox and current Laurel Canyon revivalist as the frontman of Father John Misty, and Sean Tillmann, the hypersexualized Ron Jeremy doppelganger also known as Har Mar Superstar. What brought these two under one roof, surnames aside, is inexplicable. The two couldn’t be further apart on the musical spectrum. When it came to hip swiveling dance moves and freed inhibitions, however, both Tillmans were in their zones, and on the same crowd pleasing page.

show recap: justin townes earle (may 3, 2012)

Midway through Justin Townes Earle’s Thursday night set at a packed upstairs Fitzgerald’s, a husky, bearded dude slipped past me to the front row whispering “Excuse me, I just gotta talk to Justin…” Smash cut to a dead silent venue as our guy hollered at Justin at the top of his lungs – “Hey, Justin! These people say I’m cheering too loud, but let me tell you, I know how to play all your songs! I am your number one fan!! Number one!! Tell me, am I cheering too loud?” “You kinda are now!” replied a nonplussed Earle.

show recap: delta spirit (april 12, 2012)

*Editor’s note: the included pictures are from the band’s Cactus Music instore, not their Fitzgerald’s performance. I don’t have the photo cred I once did in this tiny town.

I’ve personally seen Matt Vasquez live five times now: three as the frontman for San Diego’s Delta Spirit, and twice as a member of elite superband Middle Brother (including supemembers of Dawes and Deer Tick) and I can say, as an undeniable fact: that man is certifiably insane. I don’t mean rock star insane like how you’d classify Andrew W.K. or Les Savy Fav’s Tim Harrington. I mean, lock your children up, a human hurricane of unchecked emotion is coming, and it is destructive as fuck.

show recap: school of seven bells (april 11, 2012)

Despite the sudden departure of Claudia Deheza, vocalist and twin sister to
Alejandra Deheza, School of Seven Bells persevered and released their grandest, most lush album to date, Ghostory. The crippling blow of the absence of the dream pop band’s sibling harmonies was an afterthought to the ramped-up production and spectral arrangements of the band’s other member, Ben Curtis, formerly of Secret Machines, on the LP. Newly invigorated, School of Seven Bells brought their new sprawling new sound to Houston’s Fitzgerald’s last night.

show recap: big k.r.i.t. (february 22, 2012)

photo credit: grizzly’s phone/instagram [forgot my camera at home]

After having caught onto Wuz Here sometime in 2010, my appreciation for K.R.I.T.’s vulnerable southern snarl was immediate. There’s just something about the man that screams ingenuity and honesty. He’s taken the absolute best (and believe me, there are only a few) things about southern rap music and ran with them, highlighting his ability to tell stories, producing incredible beats and turning heads all the while.

This show was supposed to be a release party for 4eva And a Day, his upcoming mixtape due out March 6th, but due to a push back (the original date was February 21st), K.R.I.T. kind of left himself in the dust. He had a slew of new songs to premiere and no one would know em – and surprisingly, Houston didn’t seem to mind. Review after the jump.

show recap: kevin devine/river city extension (march 20, 2011)

After an exhausting 3 and a half days in Austin, TX for SXSW, both Sunbear and I trekked our way to Fitzgeralds for the proverbial end of the festival. As we were sure that the bands involved would be tired (they all looked beat) and likewise with us, we mustered up the effort and ended up seeing one of the better touring lineups in a few months.

show recap: the walkmen (march 3, 2011)

The Walkmen have had a curious following to say the least. The raucously bittersweet New York band have flirted with mainstream indie success but always come up short to their contemporaries like The Strokes or even Arcade Fire, yet have remained your favorite bands’ favorite band – The Walkmen, with their shimmering Velvet Underground meets organic urban grit sound have always been the music aficionado’s kind of band; So underappreciated in its time that they actually seem to enjoy the bit of esoteric value they’ve acquired.

Thursday’s show at Houston’s formerly ramshackle turned posh and plush revamp venue Fitzgerald’s saw absolutely no lack of devotion from this very fan base, who flocked in droves to support the band on a tour cycle for their much heralded sixth album Lisbon.

show recap: theophilus london (december 3, 2010)

I haven’t had the best luck seeing Theophilus London. The first time I had ever seen him perform was during the 2009 SXSW, having only heard a few songs prior to the performance. Immediately, I was won over and began following him closely. After having to miss the Houston stop of A-Trak’s 10000 lb Hamburger Tour, he’s yet to come by Houston.

This past SXSW, I had to miss his set due to unforeseen circumstances, which pretty much sucked. So right off the bat, I want to thank Lunaface and Hater Magazine for bringing this dude back to Houston. It’s good to know that a. we can still get great shows and b. pack them with people so they come back. As an added bonus, local upstarts Brandon West and The Black Hats, along with Fat Tony were both slated to open the show.

show recap: justin townes earle & caitlin rose (december 2, 2010)

“My Mama raised me all by herself,” proclaimed Justin Townes Earle, last night at Houston’s revamped Fitzgerald’s. “And if you’ve been reading the papers, you know I’m still a handful.”

No amount of sugar can coat Earle’s recent arrest in Indianapolis, where he was charged with public intoxication and battery against a club promoter after a performance went awry and a dressing room left trashed. Earle’s self imposed check-in to a rehabilitation clinic left his last tour in limbo, with many wondering about the state of the Americana singer-songwriter.

“If you hang around the barber shop long enough, you’re going to get a haircut. I’d just gotten to a point with my drinking that it required a medical detox. Alcoholics and junkies tend to become stupid when it comes to that. We need giant catastrophes to hip us to the fact that we’re fucked up.”

Just weeks shy of his decision to climb aboard the wagon, Justin Townes Earle (son of maverick Texas songwriter Steve Earle; namesake of Townes Van Zandt), headed out on his first national tour since the sobering incident to promote his latest, and very well-received album Harlem River Blues.
