Now in its fourth year, Houston’s Free Press Summer Fest fell upon the green slope of Eleanor Tinsley Park, boasting its most eclectic lineup to date. Texas royalty Willie Nelson shared stages with electronic act Pretty Lights. Major Lazer’s dancehall bump prefaced The Doggfather’s haze. A reunite Descendents gave way to avant-weirdos Primus. And all the while the sun beat down with a furious Texas vengeance.

free press summer fest this weekend!

this weekend, houston’s annual two-day music festival hosted by free press houston will descend upon eleanor tinsley park for its fourth incarnation, boasting its most eclectic lineup to date. we’ll be on hand, as always, to take in the sights, sounds, people, and art our weird city has to offer. make sure you’re following us on twitter for updates and stay tuned for a full festival recap after the weekend, that is if we haven’t melted under the 900 degree heat.

video: the flaming lips + lightning bolt – i’m working at nasa on acid (2011)

the split ep that the flaming lips and lightning bolt collaboration is pretty damn weird, to say the least. for their video for “i’m working at nasa on acid” (and really, who isn’t?) the flaming lips eschew drumsticks for floating lyrics. oh, and the whole things goes wacky at the 3:00 mark.

remember this pet project of the flaming lips’?

well whereas zaireeka had four seperate tracks to be combined into one mix, the new video(s) for “two blobs fucking” requires 12, count ‘em, 12 seperate youtube videos streaming in harmony to get the full effect. hope you have the dexterity to pull that off. check out the youtube channel with all the vids below.

first off, happy 50th birthday, wayne coyne!! you’re like the cool indie father-figure we all wish we had!

if you’re wondering what exactly someone like coyne does on his birthday, you shouldn’t be suprised to find the natty man hard at work on a project of pocket-proportions. taking the concept of their album zaireeka, coyne and guitarists steven drozd collect four iphones (of different generations too! equality, people!) and play four seperate flaming lips tracks. in a bathtub for best sound quality obvi – those iphone speakers are a joke.

no word if the tracks are from any upcoming release but it’s still pretty fun to see the flaming lips guys tackle their own concepts though with way less frustration.

video: ariel pink’s haunted graffiti – round and round (2010)

that ariel pink has been known to do some pretty outrageous things, like makeout with everyone and their mom at his concerts, but requesting the breast-milk of 30 women to dip a toe in for his new wayne coyne-directed video for “round and round?” what’s next? cross-dressing? oh wait …

“bloody disgusting” is would be the proper english colloquialism used to describe the flaming lips’ new video for “the sparrow looks up at the machine.” combining elements of their last few videos and a shit-ton of red corn syrup (let’s hope), the lips continue their tradition of wacky mind-bending videos. ewwwww.

off their upcoming album embryonic, the flaming lips’ song “i can be a frog” was ripe for performance. and so it was done with a single shot and a bikini-clad girl performing the song’s “i can be a…” lyrics with karen o’s sound effects (apparently phoned in) to boot. coming up next for the lips: assembling the hippie-citizens of portland oregon for a grand, naked bike-riding army.
