free album: hollywood floss – one fan at a time [with interview] (2011)

Hollywood Floss is one of our good friends here at weworemasks. He never hesitates to show us love for the love we got for him, so our working relationship is like an xzibit meme, you know? Anyway, he’s been hard at work on this project, One Fan at a Time, which is not necessarily a mixtape or an album, but something to gain some steam on these here internets, while building more hype for what’s to come in the future from this incredibly dedicated and hard working Houston act. Below, you’ll find the download and a tracklisting. Along with the download of the album, you can hit the jump for a brief catch-up interview I had with him about the album’s release.

free album: jazz cartier – losing elizabeth (2011)

We’ve been posting about Jazz Cartier for a while now, and with good reason. This recently turned 18-year old emcee/producer from Toronto, Canada has really sold me on his original brand of music, which according to him, is influenced by his own life. Losing Elizabeth is the final product after 2 years of hard work, writing, producing (alongside co-producer Michael Lantz) and arranging. During a quick conversation on Gmail, I got a little insight to this release, as in what influenced it, what influences him personally and so on.

Losing Elizabeth is a catalog of a time that involved the break up of his first love (cliched, but it’s molded a certain way here), coupled with the fact that he missed his hometown while off at boarding school, wanting to make things work out for himself. Toronto and Houston (hey, that’s where I’m from as well) have had a huge impact on him as well, and with the release of this album, he hopes that people just want to get to know him better through his music, if anything at all. He made personal progress with himself on the record and coming around on his situations helped him land on Losing Elizabeth.

And he said himself, he’s not wanting to “hype it up himself,” and he wants the music to speak for itself. Well, I don’t usually take the time to look into many projects before hand, nor do I usually care what many “submitting” artists have to say. That’s highly reflective of the fact that I actually enjoy his music. Tracklisting below the jump.

free album: dear and the headlights – demos (2011)

the criminally underrated gentleman of the late dear and the headlights have offered up a goodbye treat, putting up a collection of 30 demos recorded between 2005 and 2010. i wouldn’t necessarily use this collection as a jumping off point to the band if you’re a new listener (start with small steps, heavy hooves), but fans of the band (and great indie rock in general) will dig this.

free album: nice cliques – populra art (2011)

there’s a first time for everything, right? in this case, it’s promoting a band from the HEART OF FUCKIN’ RUSSIA. these fellas were nice enough to drop by the WWM inbox and lead us to their free music. i gotta say, this is not what i had in mind for russian ‘indie-pop-art-rock.’ then again, i’m patriotic as hell and by the purist being in me, hate all countries besides the one i reside in.

annyyyyway, these guys sound good. their full length LP, populra art reminds me of the grittier parts of the first tokyo police club EP, while dabbling in the ambience of foals and bloc party (hey, they even used the BP font for their album art). so get this free album and follow these guys around. they’re just fine.
