Hello, folks. Gonna try to roll out a few more this week while we work on our year-end lists. But for now, you get my top 10 performances of 2011.

interview: tidal arms (2011)

We’ve been all about this band as of late. we introduced them to you not too long ago. They recently stopped by Houston, TX to perform to about 1000 people as support for Glassjaw. We were excited, they were excited. We arranged to meet these guys up at a friendly neighborhood bar across the street from warehouse live (shout out to Woodrow’s and that really corny waitress who kept interrupting us!) and they were nothing but awesome, friendly and lively. The dynamics of all three of us and the band seemed to mesh well, as you’ll see in this fairly entertaining interview.

The guys talked about touring, their new album and their future plans for the year. Hit the jump for the goods, and be sure to check out their website, for the latest and greatest in the Tidal Arms camp.

show recap: glassjaw/tidal arms (february 20, 2011)

photo credit: all photos by sunbear/weworemasks.com

Ah, Glassjaw. It’s not every day that you can say that you saw Glassjaw twice in the span of one year. And it’s not every day that Glassjaw plays your hometown on your best friend’s birthday, and your entire blog staff (all three, ya bastards) hangs out together, gets silly drunk and gets to watch one of your favorite bands of all time. A belated happy birthday goes out to Sunbear, who managed to get daps from Daryl Palumbo while stumbling around in the pit and saw a massive Glassjaw set, highlighting 11 new songs that the band has put out in the last two months. Along for the ride were New York homers Tidal Arms (who gave us a fantastic interview prior — coming soon!) and These People.

Hit the jump for the review.

tour ep: glassjaw – colouring book (2011)

i’m fairly certain this post should be legal. after all, they’re giving away this EP away on tour for free. this is some of the best material to ever come out of the glassjaw camp. i couldn’t put it down last night, and i’m sure you’ll find that daryl has never sounded better. definitely left field, as far as what you’ve come to expect from glassjaw’s sound goes. the artwork i’ve included is unofficial, and apparently this one is the official artwork.

tracklisting:

1. black nurse
2. gold
3. vanilla poltergeist snake
4. miracles in inches
5. stations of the new cross
6. daytona white

introducing: social security (2011)

i can’t begin to tell you how excited we were to get a message from todd weinstock in the weworemasks box. not only that, he had kind words for us bears as well, which was a HUGE surprise. for those of you who don’t know, todd played integral parts in glassjaw and men, women and children, as well as a handful of other great long island/nyc groups. aside from that, he’s started a production duo with marc jordan, whose worked with the cult, velvet revolver, rock kills kid, a static lullaby and more. thus, social security was born.

the pair are currently looking for good, original artists to work with and expand their portfolios and that sweet jazz. the duo have studios in NYC and LA, but are willing to travel to you. some of their previous work can be heard at their soundcloud page, so hop to it. any and all interested parties should shoot them over an email at producedbysocialsecurity@gmail.com and tell em we sent ya.

introducing: tidal arms (2011)

[vodpod id=Video.5396339&w=425&h=350&fv=]

tidal arms is a great new 3-piece out of the depths of brooklyn. the members of the bands all have unique pasts. their guitarist and lead vocalist tom tierney and drummer francis mark have experience playing together in the post-hardcore outfit warship, while the latter party has been responsible for the drumming in from autumn to ashes and was the brains behinds biology. they’re rounded out with patrick southern on bass, formerly of kiss kiss fame. so the conglomerate became tidal arms, and instrumentally focused rock outfit with hints and dashes of metal, blues, jazz, folk and minus the bear throughout.

the band is gearing up for a full US tour in support of none other than long island stalwarts glassjaw, which is good news for us, as the tour hits houston, texas on february 20th. for now, download their single “hair & teeth,” which is definitely one of their sludgier and grittier songs and the one featured in the video above, and hit the myspace for a stream of “flooded meadows.”

their debut LP (self-funded and self-released) the sun exploding is out on february 13, 2011, right in time for the glassjaw tour.

glassjaw – new song; announcement of a new ep (2011)

and the glassjaw goodies keep rolling in. here’s a rip of a glassjaw song, for which the source file was named ‘gold.’ also, that tour they’re going on? they’ll be giving out free eps (that’s what gratis means, right?) at each stop on the routing. definitely a must-see.

feb. 20 can’t come soon enough.

album review: glassjaw – our color green EP (2011)

well – back to work, right? what’s most surprising is that a 5 song EP from glassjaw managed to have a bigger word count than most reviews i’ve written, which average anywhere from 400 to 500. even more notable, this is my first review for an EP – ever. even in college. it’s all good, though. here’s to the first of many reviews in ’11.

glassjaw’s back, and that’s pretty much the best thing ever.

glassjaw – our color green; the singles (2011)

EDIT: bringing this back up because it’s true, and you can now buy the EP. happy new year, playas.

well, ok then. i realized that the release of all those 7” singles were leading up to something. however, i could honestly say that i wasn’t expecting an “all in one” release of the aforementioned singles. worship and tribute came out in 02, gentleman. releasing one single every month for the past five and then banding them together as an EP EIGHT YEARS LATER does not fucking count.

this band is so frustrating. sad thing is, i’ll probably buy it. and really? tracks in alphabetical order?! hilarious.

tracklisting:

1. all good junkies go to heaven
2. jesus glue
3. natural born farmer
4. stars
5. you think you’re john fucking lennon

preorder here. drops new years day, unless amazon is in on the joke, too.
