weworemasks presents: best music videos of 2011 [year-end lists] (2011)

To start, this year-end list is not in any specific order. Rather, it’s 20 music videos I loved this year. Now, you’ll look at some of the artists and think “WTF,” but this is a music video list, people. Shitty artists still have the ability to put out great videos. Anyway, I’ll keep it brief. Hit the jump for a multimedia explosion, and don’t forgot to gripe in my direction, telling me which ones I left off the list.

weworemasks presents: top 10 live shows [year-end lists] (2011)

Hello, folks. Gonna try to roll out a few more this week while we work on our year-end lists. Sunbear is going to do his best to get a list in before the end of the year (while spending two weeks at internet cafes in the Phillipines) and Panda is on a bender at a Day Spa somewhere in Arizona. But for now, you get my top 10 performances of 2011.

weworemasks presents: top 10 disappointing albums [year-end lists] (2011)

Every year, we get a handful of albums from artists we love and begin anticipating the hell out of those respective albums. This list is pretty simple, and not really that funny. Hit the jump to see grizzly’s 10 disappointments of the past year.

weworemasks presents: top 10 worst lil wayne lyrics [year-end lists] (2011)

Readers, and so it begins. The end of the year always brings out the best in us bloggers, doesn’t it? The other day, I had my iPod on shuffle and a song from The Carter IV came up. Upon hearing a specific lyric, I deduced that Lil Wayne isn’t the prolific emcee he used to be. Don’t get it twisted, I’m a Wayne convert of year’s past. The Carter II, III and Da Drought series are some of the best material you’ll ever hear from him. However, he’s had a penchant of half-assing it this year, and this list is the by-product of all that half-assing. There are definitely many more lists to come, and I thought I’d kick it off with a funny one.

The list is after the jump.

show recap: watch the throne (december 5, 2011)

Fair warning: This review will hardly be objective. It’s hard not to bask in the glow of two of my favorite emcees of all time. And all of you know the pedestal Yeezy gets around these bear parts. But in all seriousness, this was a historic tour. A mentor and a mentee, both of whom collaborated on a huge record and have worked together plenty of times in the past, were touring together. Nevermind the fact that the tickets were costly and the tours grossed around $1 million a night – this was the Karate Kid of hip-hop tours. And you know how badass Karate Kid is.

album review: childish gambino – camp (2011)

While I had plans to write and put this review out last week, I got lazy and got really tied up with the Drake album. I know that upsets a lot of you, but you’ll have to deal. Gambino is signed and now has an album out, and it’s good to be a fan and be in the position to support an artist who gave you two great releases in EP and Culdesac for free.

Hit the jump for the review, and be sure to go grab the record when you hit a Target or something.

album review: drake – take care (2011)

Here comes an album that many of us were anticipatin’, debatin’ and already hatin’. Drake’s sophomore album hits stores today, and will probably see a massive first week’s worth of sales, so be sure to read the review before convincing yourself to go pick the record up. Or steal from the webs.

Review after the jump.

show recap: saves the day/bayside/i am the avalanche (november 3, 2011)

Saves the Day and Bayside are both veteran bands with impressive new records that hit retail earlier this year, so a co-headlining tour made sense in terms of doing what’s best to fill venues. Despite how jam-packed these lineups were, people just aren’t going to shows as much anymore, which is sad. The Warehouse Live Studio is a marquee venue for tours like this, and after seeing New Found Glory and Saves the Day perform here together two years back, we knew that this would be a nostalgia-infused show for the ages.

interview: thrice (october 5, 2011)

all photo credits: weworemasks

So at this point, this is the third (heh) Thrice interview to date for weworemasks, and it was just as fun as the first two times. I’ve never been shy about how much I like this band, so it was cool to get the chance to sit down with the bassist, Eddie Breckenridge, to talk all things tour, Major/Minor and what album he’d be interested in playing in full for an anniversary if the opportunity came up.

And I know it’s a bit dated, but the tour’s just starting and I got around to transcribing the interview today. Hit the jump and pass it along!

show recap: thrice/moving mountains (october 5, 2011)

As a reader of this blog, no one should be surprised to see Thrice show recaps on the reg. I’ve seen nearly every Thrice tour in Texas since 2001, and the current tour in support of Major/Minor is #20. That’s right, I’ve seen ONE band TWENTY times, and I’ve never gotten tired of it. Excuse my clearly biased glow and praise of this band, and hit the jump for the recap.

album review: j. cole – cole world: the sideline story (2011)

Yeah, I know. I said this would be the third review last week, but I just didn’t get around to it. Been a huge J. Cole fan, so it’s always nice to see artists you’ve been into for years finally put together and release their debut LP. Not to mention, sell 217,000 copies of it.

Hit the jump for the review and don’t sleep on this record. Just don’t.

album review: blink-182 – neighborhoods (2011)

Today was a good day to post the album review, because today’s also the day we’re catching blink-182′s Houston stop of the Honda Civic Tour. And sure, we spent weekends of our time in much more hip locations such as ACL, but we’re human, and we still grew up on these guys, right? In any case, this is one of the longest tenured bands, and I’m glad they’re still making music. I do wish that they’d buckle down and get some adult haircuts though.

Album review’s after the jump.

album review: thrice – major/minor (2011)

Thrice has pretty much been my favorite band of the last 10 years. Considering I’ve seen them 19 times (soon to be 20) since 2001, I wouldn’t say that’s too far off. Don’t worry, I’m not as biased for Thrice as I am for you know who. Hit the jump for the review.

Oh and there’s two more coming this week.

free album: hollywood floss – one fan at a time [with interview] (2011)

Hollywood Floss is one of our good friends here at weworemasks. He never hesitates to show us love for the love we got for him, so our working relationship is like an xzibit meme, you know? Anyway, he’s been hard at work on this project, One Fan at a Time, which is not necessarily a mixtape or an album, but something to gain some steam on these here internets, while building more hype for what’s to come in the future from this incredibly dedicated and hard working Houston act. show recap: austin city limits [day one] (september 16, 2011)

Austin City Limits is far and above the biggest festival in an 800 mile radius, and it’s safe to say that both Sunbear and I have both avoided it for whatever reason we could muster up. Namely – the price. Turns out, this year’s 3-day passes were bought on Sunbear’s behalf on a whim, and mine due to the mere announcement that Kanye West would be headlining one of the dates. So we braved the heat and weathered the small storms to gather with the 75,000 people (on average, per day) at Zilker Park.

For Day One’s recap, I’ll be assisting Sunbear with the write-up, and he’ll be taking charge of Days Two and Three, coming soon. Recap after the jump.
