speaking of local natives, the california boys have dropped the video for “airplanes”, the second single from gorilla manor. i’m starting to see their name a lot more on the indie blogs. late pass, suckers (but good looks on posting about a quality band). gorilla manor drops stateside february 16th.
unless you’re on the same drugs they were, the video for the first single from broken bells (aka dangermouse & james mercer of the shins) isn’t the most entertaining (or understandable) visual you’ve ever seen. still, it’s a great song, so one shouldn’t mind getting to hear it again while watching the flick. maybe dangermouse is still carrying around some of that david lynch influence? *shrug*. broken bells’ self-titled album drops march 9th.
none of the visuals i’m posting are all that new, but i wanted to get the chance to introduce you to marques toliver. the young singer/songwriter/violinist based in nyc. marques has been making a name for himself opening up for & touring with the likes of vampire weekend, bat for lashes, the kooks, and miles benjamin anthony robinson. his music is hard to describe, and is something that must be heard. while he doesn’t have music available for sale/dl yet, i leave you with a handful of videos and a myspace link. listen, love, discuss, and get very excited, as marques is currently working on music for his debut album.
xiu xiu has always been one of those acts that some truly love, some pretend to love but secretly can’t stand/understand, and some flat out hate because of the 2nd type. on his upcoming release, dear God, i hate myself, i don’t think jamie stewart & co. are going to be changing minds in any of said directions. on “gray death”, the album’s opening track, stewart lets out his melodic quiver over a more textured version of the xiu xiu we’ve all come to love/pretend to love/hate. dear God, i hate myself is out february 23rd. hit the cut for the behind the scenes video in which mr. stewart takes us on a tour of his studio/home and the various instrumentation used for the album (including a hello kitty nintendo ds).
i know we haven’t really posted about the album leaf here, but i’ve been a big fan since the early ’00s, so hearing of the new album, a chorus of storytellers, coming out in february was met with great excitement on my part. for the first time in the 10 year history of the album leaf, we get to hear jimmy lavalle’s live band on record, accompanying him in composing some of the album leaf’s finest material to date.
new video for the first single to german based solo artist get well soon’s debut album, vexations. i’ve read comparisons ranging from the arcade fire to tiger lou, from radiohead to the national. none of which are without their merit. really well done video for a great song. if they haven’t yet, expect hype blogs to follow suit in the not too distant feature. vexations is set for release in january.
i really wanted to like this album. it has a lot of potential, and there are some great songs on it. but overall, it was a fairly poor effort (much of which had to do with the production/mixing) and failed to build upon the energy that made their debut so good. this is a good song, and a pretty interesting video. dig the continuous shot.
this is just really, really exciting. jonsi, frontman of sigur ros, has been working on a solo album entitled go, and we’re now treated with a track. it’s not too drastically different an affair than some sigur ros material, but it’s wonderful nonetheless. i’m sure some of you will also be pleased to know, that the album will be largely sung in english (like this song). go will be released march 22nd, 2010 through XL recordings.
so the wonderful gentleman of fun. decided to do a deal with fans where they would release a holiday song when they hit 40,000 fans on facebook. well, they’re sitting at 40,099 and i’m sitting with a new holiday song to share with you. be sure you add it to the top of your christmas playlists.
the gentleman of the cold war kids are wasting no time in following up loyalty to loyalty with some new tunes. the band are all set to release a new ep, behave yourself, on january 19th. “audience of one” moves at a relatively slow pace, as it showcases the melodic croon of nathan willet. based on the clips in the above preview video and this track, i’d say this track will silence a lot of people that were a little less than thrilled with loyalty, and perhaps give them reason to give the album a revisit.
this clip may get axed, so let us know if it does and we’ll proceed accordingly. anyway, in their latest video for “little secrets”, passion pit have apparently chosen to take us on an intergalactic tron-esque voyage…higher and higher and higher.
looks like we’ve got the b-side to minus the bear’s “into the mirror” single. for a b-side, this is a really strong track. then again, i wouldn’t expect anything less from these guys. i can only imagine the chorus sounding absolutely massive in a live setting. the band’s follow up to planet of ice is set to drop in the first part of 2010. can’t wait.
minus the bear on myspace.
lincoln jesser is a fresh face around these parts, and a fresh face in the music scene in general i believe. lincoln describes his music as a “high-energy fusion of frank sinatra, MGMT, and passion pit”. while i think that might be just a bit of a stretch, i see the merit behind it. showing diversity while staying relatively within the same genre, jesser’s debut ep will go from auto-tuned glitch-pop on one track to darker, more synth heavy/indie based electro on another. whatever it is, it’s good, and it’s definitely worth your time.
oh sweet, sweet day. 2 new music videos plus downloads from the gentleman of hot hot heat. both tracks are from their forthcoming album, future breeds. despite popular opinion, i’ve always felt like the band have been consistent as hell with their music, and this new material is no exception. they’ve managed to tread new ground while maintaining said consistency. so good…soooo gooood. hit the cut for the accompanying videos for both tracks.
