video: the throne – niggas in paris [official] (2012)

9 02 2012

“niggas in paris” finally gets an official music video, after turning millions of heads and making “that shit cray” a staple in everyday american and seafood culture. the video finds the duo during their LA stop of the throne tour, with bouts of epilepsy and the entire visual experience of the throne tour wrapped up in a 4 minute package.

oh and this video is strangely familiar, ain’t it?

video: jay-z – live at carnegie hall (2012)

7 02 2012

the god MC makes hip-hop history by being the first rapper to headline carnegie. donning a tailored suit and backed by a full orchestra, which brought out the best in jay, who’s no stranger to marquee headline shows (glastonbury, fade to black, 9/11 specials all come to mind). he performed “glory” for the first time along with many others. bringing out guests like nas (“ny state of mind”), alicia keys (“empire state of mind”) and more, all of which that could be read about here.

tickets are quite pricey too, as they’re raising money for united way and the shawn carter foundation. swag. “ny state of mind” below the jump.

show recap: watch the throne (december 5, 2011)

8 12 2011

Fair warning: This review will hardly be objective. It’s hard not to bask in the glow of two of my favorite emcees of all time. And all of you know the pedestal Yeezy gets around these bear parts. But in all seriousness, this was a historic tour. A mentor and a mentee, both of whom collaborated on a huge record and have worked together plenty of times in the past, were touring together. Nevermind the fact that the tickets were costly and the tours grossed around $1 million a night – this was the Karate Kid of hip-hop tours. And you know how badass Karate Kid is.

Review after the jump.

young jeezy – i do [f. jay-z and andre 3000] (2011)

19 11 2011

and the song everyone was waiting for from tm103 leaks to the web. production is fantastic, jay and andre’s verses aren’t phoned in or “deuces remix” caliber (respectively), but this hook only reminds me of this.

and glad to see andre resurfacing a few times recently, but…no outkast no care.

4 10 2011

clap for ‘em. jay and beyonce (who happened to be at the university of houston yesterday!) recently held a charity fundraiser that raised a million dollars for college scholarships for underprivileged kids. a milestone by any means.

video: jay-z – empire state of mind [supermodel version] (2011)

19 09 2011

i’m guessing that in honor of fashion week, a crew of supermodels (and jay-z, i’m sure) decided it would be good to revisit one of 2009′s biggest singles, showcasing the “lipsync” “talents” of supermodels. i’m not one to complain, nor care when i’m in the presence of tall, slender women, so just sit back and watch it.

j. cole – mr. nice watch [f. jay-z] (2011)

14 09 2011

i’m getting a HUGE watch the throne influence on this track, and i have absolutely no problem with that. j. cole switches his usual delivery up for a dubby track, due off his debut LP. clean for now, explicit/cdq coming as soon as it hits.

video: mtv VMA performances (2011)

29 08 2011

so tonight was the VMAs, and i bypassed watching for personal plans and of course, breaking bad. here’s a quick rundown of anything interesting that happened as the reruns play:

-lady gaga is a fucking moron. i’m not gonna act like i don’t appreciate her music (save for born this way – the album blows), but as gawker so eloquently put it, she jumped the shark tonight. i actually MISS the meat dress.
-what the hell crawled up justin bieber’s ass? too cool to cheer for the throne, gaga (her performance was pretty good), adele and others – but he didn’t hesitate to yell “that’s my boy!!!!” after chris brown played? also, you definitely borrowed that outfit from your “runaway love” remix collaborator.
-beyonce announced she was pregnant in the absolute most endearing way. i’m no softie, but i was super stoked on kanye and jay buddying it up when she announced it to everyone. i mean, just look at the gifs!
-adele had an amazing performance. (below the jump)
-wayne’s performance was pretty bad. (up top)
-nicki minaj won best hip-hop over eminem, kanye and wayne. the hell?
-mtv is still kissing britney spears’ ass.
-kevin hart is still terribly unfunny.
-hit the jump for performances from adele, beyonce, gaga, bruno mars (amy winehouse tribute) and chris brown.

video: why you can’t hate ‘watch the throne’ – a hip-hop panel (2011)

26 08 2011

i know i’m totally biased here, but this was a pretty cool video to come across. some of hip-hop’s biggest bloggers discuss the hugest album of 2011. now, while these folks believe that you can’t hate it, i wouldn’t personally take it that far. however, it’s hard to deny the impact that this album has had on the music industry. not only in the way it hits retail, but the way it was record, who recorded on it, the magnitude of two of the biggest rappers actually releasing an album in 2011 (we’re not talking the best of both worlds here, folks) and you know – the actual music. say what you will about the emcee frontier of things, but jay-z hasn’t sounded this impressive since 2003′s black album. kanye shines on this album in his own way, but it’s nice to see him take a backseat to his ‘big brother’ once in a while.

a lot of my friends (and hey, we even got a few e-mails!) asked me why i didn’t write a review for this album. the shortform answer was that it was “too much.” there’s too much to write about and i’m not really interested in writing a 1700 word album review, and most of you aren’t interested in reading that. just know that i really love it, but it’s not necessarily my AOTY or anything. there’s a ton of great releases i see taking it down. anyway, back to the video.

video: the throne – watch the throne (2011)

12 08 2011

this video is everything i could’ve ever wanted from the watch the throne project. two dudes doin’ the damn thing. and by damn thing, i mean cutting a maybach up (yes, that happened), partying with hoes & aziz, and of course – fireworks. spike jonze – you are a monster.

watch the throne indeed.
