show recap: watch the throne (december 5, 2011)

Fair warning: This review will hardly be objective. It’s hard not to bask in the glow of two of my favorite emcees of all time. And all of you know the pedestal Yeezy gets around these bear parts. But in all seriousness, this was a historic tour. A mentor and a mentee, both of whom collaborated on a huge record and have worked together plenty of times in the past, were touring together. Nevermind the fact that the tickets were costly and the tours grossed around $1 million a night – this was the Karate Kid of hip-hop tours. And you know how badass Karate Kid is.

Review after the jump.

young jeezy – i do [f. jay-z and andre 3000] (2011)

and the song everyone was waiting for from tm103 leaks to the web. production is fantastic, jay and andre’s verses aren’t phoned in or “deuces remix” caliber (respectively), but this hook only reminds me of this.

and glad to see andre resurfacing a few times recently, but…no outkast no care.

steve stoute is the author of the tanning of america, a man who’s worked with many an artist and many a record label, as VPs, A&Rs and more. (more info here.) anyway, he recently sat down with jay-z for an interview, and we all know how well jay interviews. part I up top, part II below.

video: jay-z – empire state of mind [supermodel version] (2011)

[vodpod id=Video.15417170&w=425&h=350&fv=%26rel%3D0%26border%3D0%26]

i’m guessing that in honor of fashion week, a crew of supermodels (and jay-z, i’m sure) decided it would be good to revisit one of 2009′s biggest singles, showcasing the “lipsync” “talents” of supermodels. i’m not one to complain, nor care when i’m in the presence of tall, slender women, so just sit back and watch it.

j. cole – mr. nice watch [f. jay-z] (2011)

i’m getting a HUGE watch the throne influence on this track, and i have absolutely no problem with that. j. cole switches his usual delivery up for a dubby track, due off his debut LP. clean for now, explicit/cdq coming as soon as it hits.

video: the throne – no church in the wild [unofficial] (2011)

[vodpod id=Video.15372636&w=425&h=350&fv=]

jesus was a carpenter, yeezy laid beats and the hi5 collective put out another fantastic (unofficial) visual. for those wondering, they’re the same group who did these frank ocean and the weeknd clips.

so tonight was the VMAs, and i bypassed watching for personal plans and of course, breaking bad. here’s a quick rundown of anything interesting that happened as the reruns play:

-lady gaga is a fucking moron. i’m not gonna act like i don’t appreciate her music (save for born this way – the album blows), but as gawker so eloquently put it, she jumped the shark tonight. i actually MISS the meat dress.
-what the hell crawled up justin bieber’s ass? too cool to cheer for the throne, gaga (her performance was pretty good), adele and others – but he didn’t hesitate to yell “that’s my boy!!!!” after chris brown played? also, you definitely borrowed that outfit from your “runaway love” remix collaborator.
-beyonce announced she was pregnant in the absolute most endearing way. i’m no softie, but i was super stoked on kanye and jay buddying it up when she announced it to everyone. i mean, just look at the gifs!
-adele had an amazing performance. (below the jump)
-wayne’s performance was pretty bad. (up top)
-nicki minaj won best hip-hop over eminem, kanye and wayne. the hell?
-mtv is still kissing britney spears’ ass.
-kevin hart is still terribly unfunny.
-hit the jump for performances from adele, beyonce, gaga, bruno mars (amy winehouse tribute) and chris brown.
