show recap: justin townes earle (may 3, 2012)

Midway through Justin Townes Earle’s Thursday night set at a packed upstairs Fitzgerald’s, a husky, bearded dude slipped past me to the front row whispering “Excuse me, I just gotta talk to Justin…” Smash cut to a dead silent venue as our guy hollered at Justin at the top of his lungs – “Hey, Justin! These people say I’m cheering too loud, but let me tell you, I know how to play all your songs! I am your number one fan!! Number one!! Tell me, am I cheering too loud?” “You kinda are now!” replied a nonplussed Earle.

please don’t ask me how i missed posting this justin townes earle performance from last night. it’s simply unjust for the level of commitment i have for this man.

making his debut televised performance, justin townes earle brought with him, not just his usual suspect, upright bassistist bryn davies, but the added bonus of a full band and backup singers. sadly, fiddler josh hedley is nowhere to be seen, but that didn’t let the title track of his most recent album “harlem river blues” gallop any less. in fact, paul shaffer’s added organs really lent the song some serious gospel honky-tonk. good to see the jte band in top form.

show recap: justin townes earle & caitlin rose (december 2, 2010)

“My Mama raised me all by herself,” proclaimed Justin Townes Earle, last night at Houston’s revamped Fitzgerald’s. “And if you’ve been reading the papers, you know I’m still a handful.”

No amount of sugar can coat Earle’s recent arrest in Indianapolis, where he was charged with public intoxication and battery against a club promoter after a performance went awry and a dressing room left trashed. Earle’s self imposed check-in to a rehabilitation clinic left his last tour in limbo, with many wondering about the state of the Americana singer-songwriter.

“If you hang around the barber shop long enough, you’re going to get a haircut. I’d just gotten to a point with my drinking that it required a medical detox. Alcoholics and junkies tend to become stupid when it comes to that. We need giant catastrophes to hip us to the fact that we’re fucked up.”

Just weeks shy of his decision to climb aboard the wagon, Justin Townes Earle (son of maverick Texas songwriter Steve Earle; namesake of Townes Van Zandt), headed out on his first national tour since the sobering incident to promote his latest, and very well-received album Harlem River Blues.

stream: justin townes earle – harlem river blues (2010)

one of the best-dressed men in music (just check out the billy reid gear above) drops off his third album for streaming via the fine people at NPR. i’m on my first run through, and it’s definitely sounding like a great follow-up to last year’s midnight at the movies. vocally, earle’s voice sounds as strong as ever. the biggest difference seems to be the diversity of his musical influences seem to stand out more than before. you can hear bits of everything from elvis to johnny to southern gospel sprinkled throughout. all in all, it’ll probably be the best (and possibly only) album of it’s kind by years’ end. harlem river blues drops september 14th.
