kicking off a week’s worth of guest musical performances dubbed ‘stephest colbchella,’ stephen colbert invited backwoods legend justin vernon to sit down for an interview, and perform two songs, bon iver’s “calgary,” and for emma, forever ago’s “skinny love,” the second of which can be seen after the jump.
it still weird to anyone else to hear vernon’s speaking voice?

it’s been a good three years since justin vernon’s disarming falsetto caressed our ears with the enchanting for emma, foerver ago. since then, vernon’s dipped a toe in hip hop, and even reformed his former band deyarmond edison to grace us all with their breathtaking americana soul.
out june 21st, the eponymous album bon iver, sees vernon taking a grander approach to his utterly disarming introspective songwriting. the arrangements are more lush, more vivid and always with that layered, buttercream falsetto we’ve all come to identify with vernon. check it out below, courtesy of npr.

this past sxsw, we witnessed justin vernon and his re-formed deyarmond edison cover “you’ve got a friend” by carole king and “lovers will” by bonnie raitt. the latter artist got more syrupy sweet bon iver time in the spotlight last night, as vernon performed, accompanied only by a piano, a beautifully moving medley of songs: “a song for you” by donny hathaway, “i can’t make you love me,” and “nick of time” by bonnie raitt. just wow.

i’m not the #1 bon iver fan, but i like a handful of justin’s songs. that being said, stereogum has put together a mighty fine top 10 list of covers that vernon has released over the years. if you want to catch a whiff of 10 songs that are for the most part, completely out of his element, i’d urge you to check it out. peep the full list here.
