video: florence + the machine – no light, no light [live on letterman] (2012)

flo and her machine, which ‘made it through customs this time’ says dave, came through the ed sullivan to perform her thunderous ceremonials track “no light, no light.” check it out below, courtesy of the audio perv.

while the black keys might have sported an arcade fire-sized lineup over on snl (or something close), the dudes in no age kept it a strict twosome for letterman. a twosome with a kiss concert’s worth of guitar amps behind them. check out the band playing the surging rocker “fever dreaming” off their latest album everything in between (out now).

video: justin townes earle – harlem river blues [live on letterman] (2011)

please don’t ask me how i missed posting this justin townes earle performance from last night. it’s simply unjust for the level of commitment i have for this man.

making his debut televised performance, justin townes earle brought with him, not just his usual suspect, upright bassistist bryn davies, but the added bonus of a full band and backup singers. sadly, fiddler josh hedley is nowhere to be seen, but that didn’t let the title track of his most recent album “harlem river blues” gallop any less. in fact, paul shaffer’s added organs really lent the song some serious gospel honky-tonk. good to see the jte band in top form.

dave welcomed back the walkmen to the late show, and the band brought with them, lisbon album opener “juveniles,” as well as an impeccable sense of fashion. dave seemed more impress by the drums though. not the drummer. the set itself.

for their second appearance on the late show (and they already can’t wait to be back according to dave), the members of riot strapped on various shades of cranberry and kicked out the dance-jam, “boy” from their latest album, the orchard. how about that cellist, alexandra lawn? i like how she whips her bow at the end like she’s parrying off the evil ghost of black christmas.

video: the hold steady – the weekenders [live on letterman] (2010)

the hold steady’s heaven is whenever made its way to our ears in bits and pieces over the last month and tomorrow the album finally sees the light of day. so naturally the guys stopped by letterman to properly promote with the song “the weekenders” much to dave’s appreciation. the subdued intro hides the bombastic three guitar attack that the hold steady wields like an unruly drunk weapon. when craig plays that is. oh and lookit, hiding in the back: a keyboardist! let’s not shy away from the keys, hold steady!

can’t stop, won’t stop. a big contender for single of the year, phoenix invade the ed sullivan to perform ’1901 from wolfgang amadeus phoenix. the band are definitely more lively then from their previous us tv performance on snl. i don’t know why singer thomas mars’ wrist is taped up but i do know that someone needs to get that guy a different shirt (see: this, this and this).
