drake – the motto [f. lil wayne] (2011)

while out on a radio show yesterday, drake premiered a couple of songs for the masses, including a headlining (pun intended) track from take care. “the motto” features weezy in prime form, a real groovy ass beat and massive radio potential. as a bonus, he premiered the remix to “headlines” which features an half-autotuned t.i. verse that eventually goes off. radio rip on that one for now, will update as it comes.

the folks at XXL decided to make a video in the name of halloween for what is arguably the best three songs on the carter IV. the saddest thing is that wayne has one out of eight verses here, and his is easily the least good.

great video clip though.

show recap: lil wayne (sept. 11, 2011)

I had caught the first incarnation of Lil Wayne’s I Am Music tour in 2009, in which the support was lended by Young Jeezy, Soulja Boy and Jeremih, for better or for worse. Back then, Wayne was pre-sober, pre-jail and pre-probaton. His syrupy mindset was all but mentioned, but he managed to put on a great show – one of the better hip-hop performances I had seen. I had always been a Wayne fan from a distance too, as his musical output wasn’t always as fleshed out as Tha Carter II and Tha Carter III.

One Rebirth, I’m Not a Human Being, two mixtapes and a Carter IV later, I’m back at the Woodlands catching Lil Wayne perform again, this time with the aid of Rick Ross, Keri Hilson and Groupon. Also, it’s worth noting that this was the last night of the tour.

Hit the jump for the recap.

lil wayne – tha carter IV interlude mix (2011)

you know that time when you were listening to the carter IV, and thought to yourself — “it’d be really awesome to get this tech n9ne verse, that nas verse, the bun b verse AND the andre 3000 verse all in one place!” well, the internet listens. it takes all of the features (including wayne’s intro) from the interlude and outro to make a monster cypher-like track for all to enjoy.

video: mtv VMA performances (2011)

[vodpod id=Video.15339895&w=425&h=350&fv=]

so tonight was the VMAs, and i bypassed watching for personal plans and of course, breaking bad. here’s a quick rundown of anything interesting that happened as the reruns play:

-lady gaga is a fucking moron. i’m not gonna act like i don’t appreciate her music (save for born this way – the album blows), but as gawker so eloquently put it, she jumped the shark tonight. i actually MISS the meat dress.
-what the hell crawled up justin bieber’s ass? too cool to cheer for the throne, gaga (her performance was pretty good), adele and others – but he didn’t hesitate to yell “that’s my boy!!!!” after chris brown played? also, you definitely borrowed that outfit from your “runaway love” remix collaborator.
-beyonce announced she was pregnant in the absolute most endearing way. i’m no softie, but i was super stoked on kanye and jay buddying it up when she announced it to everyone. i mean, just look at the gifs!
-adele had an amazing performance. (below the jump)
-wayne’s performance was pretty bad. (up top)
-nicki minaj won best hip-hop over eminem, kanye and wayne. the hell?
-mtv is still kissing britney spears’ ass.
-kevin hart is still terribly unfunny.
-hit the jump for performances from adele, beyonce, gaga, bruno mars (amy winehouse tribute) and chris brown.

currensy – smoke sumthin’ [f. lil wayne] (2011)

this was supposed to be on verde terrace, but wayne was late in turning his verse in. you gotta love the harbored resentment i’m sure currensy has being put aside for the good of music. i don’t know how much of our demographic is aware that currensy used to be the premiere member of wayne’s “young money” movement, before getting dropped. turns out getting dropped from wayne was the smartest thing spitta ever did.

[vodpod id=Video.15319621&w=425&h=350&fv=%26rel%3D0%26border%3D0%26]

didn’t think i’d ever say this, but lil wayne’s new video is pretty intense, and even kinda sad. the video premiered earlier today to fairly good reviews, and i must agree. and if that wasn’t enough, weezy plans on dropping the carter IV at midnight on sunday night, following the VMAs.

the game – martians vs. goblins [f. tyler the creator and lil wayne] + good girl gone bad [f. drake] (2011)

so i’m sure these were two of the most sought out for features from game’s upcoming album. i gotta say, i hate seeing these established emcees hop on tyler’s nuts and cater their songs to sound “dark” and shit. martians vs. goblins is a throwaway outside of wayne saying “bitch i’m a muthafuckin martian,” as it’s game doing his best tyler impression, and tyler doing his best tyler impression. good girl gone bad’s got a soul sample – which is a good start, as it culminates in excellent verses from both camps.

also – game, STOP TALKIN SHIT ABOUT THE BASED GOD.

lil wayne – she will [f. drake and rick ross] (2011)

the “i’m on one” crew links up for a scrapped version of the recently released single from tha carter IV. not that i’m the executive producer, but why not cut “john” off the album completely and keep this version of the song? ross’ verse is superb.

lil wayne – she will [f. drake] (2011)

what better place than to announce that drake/wayne’s “young idea” of a collaborative album is going to be in the works – just as soon as take care and carter IV are done and released. my ETA for any project that wayne is affiliated with is about 2 years+ from its inception, but we’ll see. in an XXL article with birdman, he said that WTT was great for music, but since ye and jay are “older,” they want drake and wayne’s to be a more “younger” album. it’s whatever, as it probably won’t hold up in comparison. the best thing watch the throne did for music was invite competition. it feels like rap music again.

but in the meantime, here’s 1/2 of the duo’s studio projects for tha carter IV. a good start to their campaign, in the least. it’ll definitely be a highlight on tc4.

watch rozay and his ‘on the road’ antics while on tour on lil wayne’s allegedly dry iammusic tour. here’s a clip cataloging the events from raleigh, NC, including a performance of ‘john’ with weezy. definitely hoping to catch this tour in houston.
