video: matt & kim – cameras (2011)

[vodpod id=Video.5394582&w=425&h=350&fv=%26rel%3D0%26border%3D0%26]

from streaking through times square to the unhinged fisticuffs in their new clip, matt & kim sure know how to make entertaining videos. for the video for “cameras,” from last year’s sidewalks the duo let their violent side take over and have at each other brandishing anything at arm’s reach in their rehearsal space. this a neat bit with a kick-drum pedal at 2:04.

this might be the best close-quarters fight since uma thurman and daryl hannah’s in kill bill 2.

mountain goats – damn these vampires (2011)

the mountain goats are set to release the decidedly dark all eternals deck on march 29. inspired by 70′s occult-scare movies, john darnielle was asked on his message board if it would “be easier to write an album of love songs,” to which the songwriter replied “probably, i would not know, my focus is mainly death scenes and downtown portland” sure thing, buddy.

download the lead-off track to all eternals deck, the gloomy “damn these vampires” below.

video: social distortion – machine gun blues [live on conan] (2011)

the always nattily dressed mike ness and social distortion swung by conan o’brien to perform their lead single “machine gun blues” from their new album hard times and nursery rhymes, which was just released yesterday. in those braces, fat tie, and fedora, i don’t doubt for a second that ness is a “gangster – 1934.”

video: arcade fire & spike jonze – scenes from the suburbs (2011)

[vodpod id=Video.4941799&w=425&h=350&fv=theme%3Dblack%26amp%3BhighlightColor%3D0xFFFFFF%26amp%3Bwidget_id%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fapp.topspin.net%2Fapi%2Fv1%2Fartist%2F242%2Fbundle_widget%2F45492%26amp%3Btheme%3Dblack]

the project that arcade fire and spike jonze were collaborating on has bolstered into a full-blown short film entitled scenes from the suburbs and will premiere next month at the berlin film festival. win butler described the project as a “science-fiction B-movie companion piece” to the band’s latest album.

in this short but emotional clip, set to the title song, a group or suburban ragtags on two-wheelers play out an picturesque adolescent summer, oblivious to the ever encroaching proximity of the military until their lives turn to sheer anarchy.

the new video for cold war kids’ “louder than ever” off the upcoming mine is yours (jan 24) plays like dream come true for an undiscovered beauty destined for the catwalk. at the expense of being severed from her boyfriend, a demure damsel is put through the fashion wringer to become a stunning looker. yeah, there’s shots of the band, but really my focus was on the brunette with the cheekbones. and how!

yelle – safari disco club (2011)

french electro-pop darling (i can stop there can’t i?) yelle is back with a new album, sarfari disco club due out march 21 and if the title track is any indication, it’s going to be another silly good time. i’d brush up on my french if i ever had a lesson, but that doesn’t detract from the playful absurdity of the song, which actually does sound like a safari disco club.

best coast – when you wake up (2011

Photobucket

the better-half of the tour-only summer is forever 7″ collaboration is getting her song out, hopefully before any more snow in this country renders her cheery california pop usesless. best coast’s “when you wake up” is the usual summery fare from cosentino, full of enough “oooohs” to make you “ahhhhhh.” that is if you’re not digging a tunnel through snow to the surface, rest-of-america

while the black keys might have sported an arcade fire-sized lineup over on snl (or something close), the dudes in no age kept it a strict twosome for letterman. a twosome with a kiss concert’s worth of guitar amps behind them. check out the band playing the surging rocker “fever dreaming” off their latest album everything in between (out now).

middle brother – me, me, me (2011)

that up there is the supergroup middle brother, comprised of matthew vasquez of delta spirit, deer tick frontman john mccauley, and dawes’ taylor goldsmith. that bit of info just ties together the artwork, doesn’t it?

the boys (with godsmith’s bro-bro laying down percussion) have released a new song from their self-titled debut album, due march 1st. “me, me, me” is knee slapping jamboree, full of twanging guitars, sharp piano plinks, and all the gusto of a band on the run. listen to it below.

video: justin townes earle – harlem river blues [live on letterman] (2011)

[vodpod id=Video.5283823&w=425&h=350&fv=%26rel%3D0%26border%3D0%26]

please don’t ask me how i missed posting this justin townes earle performance from last night. it’s simply unjust for the level of commitment i have for this man.

making his debut televised performance, justin townes earle brought with him, not just his usual suspect, upright bassistist bryn davies, but the added bonus of a full band and backup singers. sadly, fiddler josh hedley is nowhere to be seen, but that didn’t let the title track of his most recent album “harlem river blues” gallop any less. in fact, paul shaffer’s added organs really lent the song some serious gospel honky-tonk. good to see the jte band in top form.
