video: of montreal – l’age d’or (2011)

30 06 2011

of montreal’s hyper-sexual thecontrollersphere track “l’age d’or” gets a wildly colorful video featuring lead singer kevin barnes surrounded by a harem of painted women. there might have been boobs, i’m not sure. best be nsfw, just to be safe.

video; of montreal – fell in love with a girl [white stripes cover] (2011)

24 05 2011

it’s a bit of shock to see of montreal outside the uncomfortable confines of their elaborate and psychedelic stage show. even more to see kevin barnes in a pair of jeans. watch the (usually) oddball bizarro band take on the white stripes’ classic “fell in love with a girl” (bass included) in the latest a.v. club undercover.

stream: of montreal – flunkt sass vs. the root plume (2011)

11 04 2011

of montreal’s kevin barnes have made well aware that they more often than naught channel david bowie. none more apparent than this glammy tune from their upcoming ep thecontrollersphere due april 26. the album’s full of false priest-era cuts with “flunkt sass vs. the root plume” (wtf?) sounding very “space oddity-ish.” stream it over on npr.

show recap: of montreal/janelle monae (november 4, 2010)

9 11 2010

What can you expect from an of Montreal show 14 years into their bizarre career? Well, pretty much for bizarre to be … expected. At first, the collaboration between Janelle Monae and Of Montreal remained as the only link between the two bands, that is, until the show was over. This entire tour’s purpose was seen through the stage presence of both of these festival-headline-worthy acts, as the False Priests Meets the ArchAndroid tour hit Numbers, a Houston venue that is on its gradual descent into one of the city’s oldest, most historic (and equally disgusting) venues.

For the record, we didn’t want to pin the duties of this post to one bear, and seeing as how two were in attendance and Sunbear’s Fun Fun Fun Fest work will become demanding over the next two days, this is a joint venture.

Hit the jump for the recap.

video: of montreal – famine affair (2010)

3 11 2010

what do you make of a dappily dressed man who comes upon a baby shower turned orgy, the ladies of the house forcing you to provide seed? let of montreal frontman kevin barnes explain:

“It’s the story of a man living in a feminine empire. As a male, he is considered lower class. He is expected to abstain from any social interaction with members of the ruling class, and provide sperm for breeding rituals. Each household is provided by the State with one male, the housemale is not permitted to leave the grounds. The housemale must live in the estate he is assigned to until death or sexual impotence.”

glad that’s cleared up. watch the sexy new video for “famine affair” from of montreal’s false priest above.

video: of montreal – michael jackson medley (2010)

21 09 2010

kevin barnes has always been vocal about his influences, and as a hat trick to the gloved one, of montreal have been ending their recent shows with this medley of “thriller,” “wanna be startin’ somethin’,” and “p.y.t.” here theyn are doing just that in their hometown of athens, georgia.

video: of montreal – heimdalsgate like a promethean curse (2010)

15 09 2010

taken from their cemetery gates performance on pitchfork, of montreal get a bit noir and genesis-era peter gabriel as they perform two false priest tracks with some help with solange knowles. but seeing as the last few of montreal updates have been priest-heavy, i thought i’d throw it to this performance of hissing fauna are you the destroyer cut “heimdalsgate like a promethean curse.” the band has never sounded more bombastic here with their newly expanded band and a noticably more confident kevin barnes. o wait, he’s already crazy confident with himself(nsfw)? catch “sex karma” and “coquet coquette” below.

stream: of montreal – hydra fancies (2010)

7 07 2010

having released “coquet coquette” last week as a free download for their upcoming album, false priest, of montreal have yet another preview for you. “hydra fancies” is streaming over on some kind of awesome and is definitely a more chillaxed sound from the usually irreverent band, but it certainly isn’t without its quirk.

false priest is out september 14th.

video: of montreal + solange knowles – i want you back [jackson 5 cover; live] (2010)

27 01 2010

solange exercising more of her new found cred by joining kevin barnes and his traveling circus on stage for an extremely pleasing cover of the jackson five classic. this was in lieu of the recent announcement that said live collaborators would be joining forces for of montreal’s new album, which aj is surely jolly for.

anyway, enjoy the video for now – shouts to you aint no picasso. mp3 hopefully soon enough. hint hint.

show recap: houston free press summerfest [day two] (8-09-09)

11 08 2009

summerfest

with the first day of summer fest behind us, the wwm fam and friends once again descended upon eleanor tinsley park to bear witness (get it?) to sets from even more texas bands and a modern-day glam rock headliner. the day would be full of scattered showers, endless vitamin water, a paint slide, and a trippy little guy who only came to be known as ‘hippie mike‘.

video: of montreal – live from summerfest in houston, tx (2009)

10 08 2009

of montreal performing “sentence of sorts in kongsvinger” at the summerfest in houston, tx on 8-09-09

sunday’s headliner for the houston free press summer fest was of montreal. while i’m not a fan of this band whatsoever, their live show is a fleet of theatrics, extravagant lighting, confetti and indecent exposure. kevin barnes and company put on a hell of a show, but that’ll be covered in the day two recap of the fest, provided by sunbear probably tomorrow.

for now, enjoy the video posted above, and two more after the cut. and one of them’s a bowie cover.

23 07 2009

the stereogum family have premiered the new video for of montreal’s ‘mingusings’ from their latest (though hardly greatest) album skeletal lamping. anyone who’s seen an of montreal show in the last couple years should be familiar with bodysuit-man here in the vid, gallivanting around athens GA, pawning a computer screen for a trip to australia and saving kevin barnes from a certain watery death. can’t get that kimono wet, kb.

free press houston presents summerfest (2009)

4 06 2009

when you live in the fourth (or fifth?) largest city in the united states and you see shit like bonnaroo and coachella and all these epic festivals going on everywhere BUT here, you really start to think about how shitty your city really is.

then, out of the fucking woodwork comes this festival. at $7 per day, there’s no possible way anyone in houston should miss this.

a great lineup presented by free press houston featuring the finest indie rock lineup this side of the 2005 ACL festical. broken social scene, explosions in the sky, voxtrot, the sword, octopus project and of montreal. not to mention, the big homie fat tony’s gonna be in the house.

a 2 day festival, in which you can buy a 2-day pass for $14 including all fees. very recession friendly. buy your tickets here.

we’ll see ya at the park.
