news: jay-z’s roc nation signs to universal, made in america festival teaser released

last year’s made in america festival was a success and as if we didn’t already know, a 2nd annual festival was announced. the trailer above flashes the dates aug 31-sept 1 and puts together a nice montage of last year’s act.

on to the business side of things, jay’s roc nation signed a deal with universal. universal now takes roc nation “under its umbrella” and allows it to operate as its own label. more on that here.

jay electronica – the announcement (2010)

while the actual announcement was made this past saturday, jay elec performed a freestyle at the event, which was later recorded to some smooth, tribal esque production with a JFK sample and unleashed for all to hear.

so glad to have this guy in motion.

in one of the biggest headlines of the week (ok, for hip-hop), jay electronica has signed to jay-z’s home at roc nation. i can’t say that this move is better than him being on g.o.o.d. music with his brethren mos def (originally rumored) but i’m happy that dude decided to sell out and join a conglomerate. no, that’s not sarcasm. maybe now he has that extra nudge he needed to get off his ass and release something concrete for all these loyal followers (me) he’s acquired off of unofficial mixtapes and TWO SONGS.

this shouldn’t need an introduction. hype this, hype that. the score isn’t too reflective of my love for jay-z and what he’s done for my personal tastes and hip-hop in general. the man is the true definition of an idol. i’m picking this up today.
