This will be the third time I’ve seen J. Cole perform. As someone who’s been a fan since The Warm Up, I’m glad to see this guy progress and become more and more huge as time progresses. His emceeing ability is second to very, very few in the “freshman” category, so it’s definitely refreshing. Anyway, I showed up late to avoid the supposed huge lines, and seeing as how there were only two acts, the recap will reflect as such.

show recap: lil wayne (sept. 11, 2011)

I had caught the first incarnation of Lil Wayne’s I Am Music tour in 2009, in which the support was lended by Young Jeezy, Soulja Boy and Jeremih, for better or for worse. Back then, Wayne was pre-sober, pre-jail and pre-probaton. His syrupy mindset was all but mentioned, but he managed to put on a great show – one of the better hip-hop performances I had seen. I had always been a Wayne fan from a distance too, as his musical output wasn’t always as fleshed out as Tha Carter II and Tha Carter III.

One Rebirth, I’m Not a Human Being, two mixtapes and a Carter IV later, I’m back at the Woodlands catching Lil Wayne perform again, this time with the aid of Rick Ross, Keri Hilson and Groupon. Also, it’s worth noting that this was the last night of the tour.

show recap: taking back sunday/thursday (july 4, 2011)

Houston isn’t one to get too many ‘holiday’ shows. So an Independence Day with two bands I grew up listening to, a little beer and a solid round of company seemed like the perfect blend of circumstances to have a good time. Taking Back Sunday is newly reformed, with the original lineup of the days of 2002, which was clear and away one of the most crucial reasons the folks in attendance were there to begin with.

show recap: vans warped tour (june 25, 2011)

I’ve been going to Warped Tour as a kid. I first went to the “punk rock summer camp” in 2001 and have only missed three since. While the festival is a far cry from what it used to be, it’s a good stomping ground for new and old bands alike to find the whole ‘music’ thing in common and put on a festival for fans who brave the 100+ degree Texas heat.

Like last year, I had a previous event/engagement that prevented Sunbear and I from attending this year’s activities. However, with the help of the extended BBC (Billionaire Bears Club, yall) correspondents Mike Damante (aka White Mike/Honorary Polar Bear) and Nathan Eguia (aka Honorary Kodiak Bear), we were able to get our hands on a bit of a recap. show recap: rx bandits farewell tour (july 1, 2011)

RX Bandits have been a long time staple in my musical progression through the ages. I can’t say this about many bands, but they’re one of very few; an elite list of bands that have survived the 2000s on to the 2010s. I first came to love this band during the Progress days of 2001, and have continued to follow and appreciate their progression through the years, the albums, the record label woes and the lineup changes.

When word of the ‘farewell’ tour came around, I was a bit bummed to say the least. One of the most consistent and impressive rock bands calling their live aspect quits isn’t exactly the best foundation for a tour, but alas – there was no way I’d miss this tour.

show recap: panic! at the disco/fun. (june 15, 2011)

I’ll be the first to admit that while I really like both of these bands, going to their joint show with a crowd that was undoubtedly going to be younger than me all the way across the board isn’t my cup of tea. I’m not trying to be the bitter drunk guy who sits in the back and mumbles that “he saw Panic! in 2005″ or “Have you even heard of The Format?” – scratch that, I am trying to be that guy. Because of such a circumstance, I was completely wary of this show. However, the tour stopped by Houston’s House of Blues on Wednesday night and I attended hoping to have a good time and of course, be proven wrong of all my jaded delusions. Recap after the jump. Okay, let’s stop right there. In the first words uttered by Win Butler, we had either breathed a collective sigh of relief, knowing that Arcade Fire, as begrudging as they can be toward their dusty Texan roots, were actually feeling pretty good about returning home (something they haven’t done since a headlining gig at Fat Cat’s – max capacity 130), or were directly lied to, by the straight-faced frontman of the band who took home the album of the year at this year’s Grammy’s.

As of sometime before last summer, I became the biggest Donald Glover fan. After catching some of his stand-up, becoming obsessed with Community and catching a whiff of Childish Gambino right before Culdesac came out, this Hollywood renaissance man hit the top of my list of ‘rad dudes.’ Suffice it to say, I was more than happy to find that his IAMDONALD tour was hitting Houston. I tried to get an interview, but it turns out his management only wanted to do interviews that run in print AND online. That being said, I gladly purchased a ticket to the show, for the first time in a long time, to catch the unique tour offering.

show recap: j. cole/the niceguys (april 5, 2011)

A couple of weeks ago, J. Cole played an Austin show at a fraternity house for charity. That show sold out at about $25 a ticket, but naturally, I didn’t go for several reasons. The price for one. For two, it was the week after SXSW, so it’s safe to say I was a little burned out on Austin. I was more than happy to find that my dudes in the Niceguys were opening up for Cole at a Prairie View ‘Springfest’ event only two weeks after I heard all the acclaim from the previous show in my inner circle.

An hour drive isn’t too bad for a free J. Cole/Niceguys show, right?

After an exhausting 3 and a half days in Austin, TX for SXSW, both Sunbear and I trekked our way to Fitzgeralds for the proverbial end of the festival. As we were sure that the bands involved would be tired (they all looked beat) and likewise with us, we mustered up the effort and ended up seeing one of the better touring lineups in a few months.

This time of the year is always pretty hectic. Between not paying for badges and getting into half of the shows we wanted to, getting drunk and finding free shit, SXSW can be a pretty pressing time. Luckily, we don’t complain that much. We threw up a mixtape prior to the event, but in any case, this recap will be quick and to the point. You’ll find each day broken down into who and what we saw, accompanied by blurbs written by Sunbear and I — all will be marked for your convenience.

For starters, this “recap” was never planned to ever be posted. It was a free show at a university that I wasn’t expecting much of. My brother and his friends decided to go, so I figured I should too. I mean, I like the guy, right? Turns out, the events that transpired this evening made for one of the cooler stories at a show I’ve had. I’d also like to note that this is in no way a “review,” merely a lengthy livejournal-esque post.

show recap: linkin park (march 3, 2011)

For starters, this is the biggest show weworemasks has ever been asked to cover. A personal feat to say the least, it was even greater of a feat after arriving to the venue. We were given very close seats (Section 121, check the map!) which entailed us having our own bar and bathroom. So we definitely send our gratitude to our connect Renee at Machine Shop.

After having to cancel a slew of dates due to singer Chester Bennington’s vocal cords being compromised, Linkin Park had returned to their rescheduled date at the Toyota Center to end their world tour for their latest album, A Thousand Suns. It was a packed house to say the least, and the band brought on some of Houston’s best and worst Linkin Park fans to join the festivities for their tour closer.

Robyn had a hell of a 2010. Culminating in the three-part Body Talk series, which was universally acclaimed by music critics worldwide, the Swedish dance-pop starlet poured real emotion into her unique brand of forward-thinking dance music, reinventing herself yet again from the fledgling pop star we first heard in the 1996 made for radio single “Show Me Love.” Though hardly having truly broken through on American soil due to lack of push by her labels, Robyn wrapped a successful Body Talk tour with a spectacular packed show at Houston’s Warehouse Live last Saturday, affirming that some of music’s best kept secrets are anything but.

Ah, Glassjaw. It’s not every day that you can say that you saw Glassjaw twice in the span of one year. And it’s not every day that Glassjaw plays your hometown on your best friend’s birthday, and your entire blog staff (all three, ya bastards) hangs out together, gets silly drunk and gets to watch one of your favorite bands of all time. A belated happy birthday goes out to Sunbear, who managed to get daps from Daryl Palumbo while stumbling around in the pit and saw a massive Glassjaw set, highlighting 11 new songs that the band has put out in the last two months. Along for the ride were New York homers Tidal Arms (who gave us a fantastic interview prior — coming soon!) and These People.
