at new orleans’ voodoo experience last weekend, the avett brothers broke out their tour staple cover of neutral milk hotel’s “in the aeroplane over the sea.” wouldn’t you know it, seth avett sounds exactly like jeff mangum. watch the fan footage above.
the other night, the avett brothers made their way on through jimmy kimmel live! to perform a pair of songs from their just-released new album the carpenter. up top, you can watch their rollicking performance of “live and die,” and down after the jump, the movingly tender “february seven.” stream the album here.
the avett brothers brand new, rick rubin-produced sixth studio LP will be out here on september 11th. thanks to ol faithful at NPR music, we have it just a shade earlier than that. listen to the whole record there.

Now in its fourth year, Houston’s Free Press Summer Fest fell upon the green slope of Eleanor Tinsley Park, boasting its most eclectic lineup to date. Texas royalty Willie Nelson shared stages with electronic act Pretty Lights. Major Lazer’s dancehall bump prefaced The Doggfather’s haze. A reunite Descendents gave way to avant-weirdos Primus. And all the while the sun beat down with a furious Texas vengeance.

first off, FY dirk. hate him, hate the mavs, etc. but this video is pretty awesome. at saturday night’s avett show in grand prairie, texas, dirk found a better way to pass time in the offseason – by getting up on stage with summerfest headliner and rockin’ the shit outta some tambourine.
this weekend, houston’s annual two-day music festival hosted by free press houston will descend upon eleanor tinsley park for its fourth incarnation, boasting its most eclectic lineup to date. we’ll be on hand, as always, to take in the sights, sounds, people, and art our weird city has to offer. make sure you’re following us on twitter for updates and stay tuned for a full festival recap after the weekend, that is if we haven’t melted under the 900 degree heat.

i didn’t much pay attentin to the avett brothers prior to hearing them open for the decemberists this last sxsw. what i heard was a composite of folk and bluegrass played with the aggresive chutzpah of a punk band. since then, their 2007 album emotionalism hasn’t left my uh, ipod. now the brothers avett are set to release their new album i and love and you next week, and their album is available for streaming over on npr.
