the good and the bad goes like this: the flaming lips’ sxsw performance of their definitive record yoshimi battles the pink robots was recorded by the warner sound and is up for your viewing pleasure above. but the fucking soundguy must have been asleep at the wheel because the mix sounds so terribly muddled it’s a discredit to the 30 year-old band. watch what you can above.
you know i just realized, the baby that wayne coyne was cradling during last week’s lettermanperformance of “look…the sun is rising” is maybe, just maybe, a full grown flaming lips gummy fetus. no? that’s okay. stream the band’s new album the terror at the npr link below.
kes$ha collaborators the flaming lips brought led-tubing and ipads and what looks to be a friggin’ baby to the late show last night where they performed the terror track “look…the sun is rising.” dave, of course, was a huge fan of the baby. watch the tv clip above.
not letting fat baby bella’s smear campaign on the original version of the nayrok badu-starring “the first time i ever saw your face” video slow their roll, the flaming lips decided to re-record the song and make the same video with someone who is definitely a bit more game – amanda freakin’ palmer. this time though, in stead of glitter, blood, and um… white, viscous material, palmer splashes about in a tub of just plain water. nsfw, if you must know.
i could not have asked for a better band to tackle the flaming lips’ eternal “do you realize??” for the a.v. club undercover. donning 3-d glasses and the most glorious harmonies the little round room has ever heard, check out father john misty’s moving cover of the yoshimi battles the pink robots standout above.
a huge congratulations to the flaming lips, who yesterday, broke a world-record for the most concerts played in a 24 hour time span – a title previously held by jay-z. in the scramble of those eight concerts, the band performed a new song “you lust” with tour-mates phantogram, whilst at city #6, biloxi, mississippi. check it out above, as documented by mtv.
radiohead’s touring family suffered an unspeakable loss over the weekend, and the band had to cancel their toronto show following the death of drum technician scott johnson during a stage collapse hours before the scheduled performance.
the flaming lips, whose show in toronto went on, took a moment to send their prayers and karma to the families of those affected by the disaster as well as pay a loving tribute in the form of a cover of “knives out.” check it out above.
when they’re not pissing erykah badu off, the flaming lips are on their guiness world record shit, attempting to play 8 shows in one day, which will give them the edge in the “honor.” check the routing below the jump.
last week, when the flaming lips’ video for ‘the first time i saw your face’ or ‘western esotericism’ hit the web, it would turn out that erykah badu was fucking pissed that wayne and company let the rough edits hit the web. click the link below to read a very long rant from ms. badu herself.
another successful free press summer fest for the houston history books went down this past weekend on the rolling green slope of eleanor tinsley park, and weworemasks was on hand to catch all the sights, sounds, and people our weird city has to offer. and the heat wasn’t that bad this year. plus plus! check out our photo recap and be on the lookout for a full festival recap soon.
you all follow wayne coyne on twitter don’t you? the man’s been going on about a double bubble space walk with tourmate and weezer frontman, rivers cuomo. he’s been teasing with pictures and updates and last night at holmdel, new jersey, he made this dream a reality.
watch the two hampster-ball it through the crowd as well as perform the lips’ “she don’t use jelly” and the =w=’s “udnone (the sweater song)” after the jump.
for two nights last week, the flaming lips woke the dead, performing two albums in their entirety at the hollywood forever cemetery: their 1999 masterpiece the soft bulletin, and another bands’ 1973 masterpiece the dark side of the moon.
a one joseph tsai was on hand to film both sets from a vantage point we’re all familiar with: the crowd shot. up top is bulletinopener “face for the prize” and down below are links to the full sets.
well, it wouldn’t be a flaming lips music video in 2010 without a naked girl whose nipples have been poorly edited out, would it? and the main attraction is an animated fire crotch (or is it paint crotch?) that allows said naked girl to fling said fire and/or paint at her immediate surroundings. from 09′s embryonic, and totally nsfw.
In an act of Summerfest self-fulfillment, day two paralleled last years weather patterns, with the excruciatingly heated first day being followed by a torrential reprieve on the second. This time, the rain would prove to be on the oppressive side, leaving gloomy clouds hanging above the festival goers and acts of Summerfest. Several weather defiant bands would throw caution to the wind and houston made the best of what mother nature had to offer in the form of the notorious mud-people. Inclement weather wasn’t enough to deter the whole of houston to miss what the festival had in store and the bands played on’ a testament to the music loving spirit of Summerfest.
