album review: the get up kids – there are rules (2011)

Photobucket

what to do after a seven year split and you’ve aged as ungracefully as your band name? the get up kids are back with there are rules (out january 25th) and the ace up these guys’ sleeves is how much they’ve matured without ever really growing up.

the get up kids – shatter your lungs (2011)

there are rules (out january 25) is shaping up to be a mixed bag of tricks, granted these old dogs still have some new ones in ‘em. “shatter your lungs” is heavy on the james dewees and i mean that as “he’s the whole freakin’ song.”

everything from the drums, bass, samples, synth squelches… everything save for for matt pryor’s familiar voice is all james. james in full effect, as it were. and that’s pretty damn awesome. check out the song at the link below.

the get up kids – daytrotter sessions (2009)

the get up kids

lawrence, kansas’ newly reunited kings of emo, the get up kids, dropped by the wonderful daytrotter studios to track a new song (!), a vitreous humor cover, and some of their classic material from their discography. most exciting is the talk of the 9 songs that the band recorded for their new release, their one song “keith case” i’ve already heard live in san antonio.

make sure to stay posted for a show review by me after the get up kids swing by the house of blues here in houston next month.
