show recap: thrice farewell tour (may 10-11, 2012)

Well, folks. This is the last “last tour” I would want to be reviewing. Since 2001, Thrice has been a mainstay in my musical emergence, maturation and all that mushy stuff. It was good to be presented with a weekend opportunity to catch them twice: once in Austin and once in our hometown. So we rallied up our closest friends who were Thrice fans, trekked to Austin to catch a set for fun, and trekked back home to catch what would probably be our last Thrice show for sentimental and blog purposes.

I’m going to go ahead and throw this out there: this is an incredibly biased recap; if you’re here to see what was wrong with it, you’re looking in the wrong place. Hit the jump for the review, setlists and photos.

happy 10th anniversary: the illusion of safety + second stage turbine blade (2012)

thought i’d take the time to highlight two of my favorite albums of all time, both of which who turned ’10′ in the past couple days.

first, thriceillusion of safety. — pretty much my favorite band, and the album that started it all. sure, i had heard identity crisis, but it wasn’t until this album dropped (DEADBOLT!!!!) till i realized how full of BAMFers these orange county guys were.

next, coheed and cambriasecond stage turbine blade. — the proggy bastards in coheed started out their elusive saga with this first record – a grower, not a show-er.

i kind of lump these two bands in the same “era” of music for me, as they were both pretty central in what i was listening to in my adolesence. (see: the emo swoop years) anyway, spend 1.5 hours jamming these today and thank me later!

compilation: thrice – the complete b-sides collection (2012)

thrice is pretty much my favorite band, and i’m sad about the hiatus and stuff — so here’s the deal. a user on absolutepunk.net (ACA) posted this up. he might be the man behind it, so here i am bringing it to you and any other fan of thrice. this is a pretty accurate and complete collection of b-sides from every era of thrice. from 1999′s first impressions EP to the beggars era, including all the christmas songs, covers and reworks in between. i’d throw up a tracklisting, but that’s half the fun.

oh and i did the artwork fairly quickly.

riley breckenridge [of thrice] – 31,556,926 moments (2011)

what does thrice drummer do in his spare time? create beautiful instrumentals, that’s what. “31 million something” moments is a lush instrumental laced with programmed drum patterns and pianos. download it for a buck via you know who.

thrice announce hiatus (2011)

in the news that all thrice diehards like myself were both dreading and expecting, dustin kensrue has released a statement for the band, indicating that they will be taking some time off after their spring tour. while details of the tour have not been divulged (other than the fact that a lot of old songs will be played), the details of the hiatus have. dustin will go on to tend to his domestic duties of raising his 3 children and spending time with the wife; likewise with teppei. a full statement can be read on their website (or below the jump), and my statement is as follows:

thanks for the good times, thrice. i’ve seen you on every tour in houston (and some in austin and san antonio) since 2002 and would probably go watch you another twenty times. good luck with all future endeavors and come back soon, k thx.

video: thrice – baeble acoustic sessions (2011)

there aren’t many better things thrice does than turn their electric songs acoustic. and for fans of major/minor, baeblemusic put together a session of a handful of m/m songs spliced with interviews and all that good stuff. head over to baeble to watch the whole thing.

video: thrice – promises (2011)

[vodpod id=Video.15641395&w=425&h=350&fv=allowfullscreen%3Dtrue%26bgcolor%3D%23000000%26url%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.ign.com%2Fvideos%2F2011%2F11%2F02%2Fexclusive-thrice-video%26]

the boys in thrice have released a performance based music video for their major/minor single, and i could’ve sworn the single was “yellow belly.” no problem here, because “promises” is much better. love the blurred visuals here. then again, thrice could’ve had a collage of rainbows and dead horse fetuses and i probably would’ve thought it was heartbreaking and innovative.

interview: thrice (october 5, 2011)

all photo credits: weworemasks

So at this point, this is the third (heh) Thrice interview to date for weworemasks, and it was just as fun as the first two times. I’ve never been shy about how much I like this band, so it was cool to get the chance to sit down with the bassist, Eddie Breckenridge, to talk all things tour, Major/Minor and what album he’d be interested in playing in full for an anniversary if the opportunity came up.

And I know it’s a bit dated, but the tour’s just starting and I got around to transcribing the interview today. Hit the jump and pass it along!

show recap: thrice/moving mountains (october 5, 2011)

As a reader of this blog, no one should be surprised to see Thrice show recaps on the reg. I’ve seen nearly every Thrice tour in Texas since 2001, and the current tour in support of Major/Minor is #20. That’s right, I’ve seen ONE band TWENTY times, and I’ve never gotten tired of it. Excuse my clearly biased glow and praise of this band, and hit the jump for the recap.

album review: thrice – major/minor (2011)

Thrice has pretty much been my favorite band of the last 10 years. Considering I’ve seen them 19 times (soon to be 20) since 2001, I wouldn’t say that’s too far off. Don’t worry, I’m not as biased for Thrice as I am for you know who. Hit the jump for the review.

Oh and there’s two more coming this week.

here’s another, fantastic song from thrice’s upcoming major/minor record, which they premiered via fuelTV’s the daily habit. note to fuel: get better a/v equipment. this looks like it was shot via a pretty nice webcam.
