show recap: blu (oct. 23, 2010)

31 10 2010

panda and i hit up boston last week; deemed an “inspirational” trip for the 2.0 version of the blog, hopefully coming during the cusp of 2010-11. in any case, we managed to catch one of our favorite emcees in action while we were up there, and there are definite mixed feelings involved. i’ll keep the recap as brief as the show was. i did happen to take some photos and video, which will take up a considerable amount of room here.

blu is erratic; we all know this. the guy doesn’t make music for anyone but himself. you’re always hearing about artists doing that, but blu is one of VERY few artists who literally couldn’t care less if you were listening or not. with promises of a live band: blu showed up without one. when the dj started spinning songs from below the heavens (or any of his back catalog), blu scratched the 1s and 2s, dismissing the songs and saying “they ain’t ready for that shit yet.” it’s like he was in his own hazy world, doing what he wanted, when he wanted. after showcasing about 5 new songs, he went into a “mini-set” of old material, dating from below the heavens and her favorite colour, to newer songs like the flying lotus-produced “gngbng.” all in all, it WAS a good show, it just wasn’t what it could’ve been, mainly to blu being as indifferent as any rapper could possibly be.

hit the jump for videos of “my world is…,” “blu collar workers” and “soul amazin,” as well as some photos.

show recap: glassJAw. (march 4, 2010)

6 03 2010

i can’t recall a single band that has been as cryptic and frustrating as they’ve been satisfying and important to my personal tastes and musical growth. worship & tribute, while one of my all time favorite albums, came out in 2002, and the band has yet to properly release anything since then. nearly 8 years later, on a thursday two weeks before austin’s biggest music conference, they managed to sell out a show in two week’s time. let’s face it; there aren’t many bands that premiere a song at show in late 2006 and put the recorded version up in 2008, and completely get away with it the majority of their fanbase. glassjaw’s inactivity is almost endearing at this point.

after having traveled to fort worth in late 2006 to catch their last texas date, there wasn’t the slightest chance that i wouldn’t be attending this show.

hit the jump for the recap.

moving mountains performing “lights and shapes” in houston, tx

so i’ve basically been in love with pneuma since late 2007 and foreword was my favorite EP of 2008. so to say i was excited about seeing a band that’s yet to step foot in texas was an understatement. moving mountains, accompanied by all day holiday set up a show a few weeks ago, and there was little chance of me missing it.

video: of montreal – live from summerfest in houston, tx (2009)

10 08 2009

of montreal performing “sentence of sorts in kongsvinger” at the summerfest in houston, tx on 8-09-09

sunday’s headliner for the houston free press summer fest was of montreal. while i’m not a fan of this band whatsoever, their live show is a fleet of theatrics, extravagant lighting, confetti and indecent exposure. kevin barnes and company put on a hell of a show, but that’ll be covered in the day two recap of the fest, provided by sunbear probably tomorrow.

for now, enjoy the video posted above, and two more after the cut. and one of them’s a bowie cover.

thrice – beggars tracklisting x artwork (2009)

16 07 2009

i’m sorry, i have to post about this. the cover is fucking awesome. the tracklisting’s pretty short, but the two new songs ranged from 4-5:30 in length, so i’m expecting a 40+ minute album, which is always fine by me.

oh, we interviewed thrice at the warped tour, so don’t forget to check that out.

tracklisting after the jump.

6 07 2009

one goes down, and another goes up. our newest spotlight is warped tour. i got to go to warped tour for free, so i took the opportunities to grab some interviews with the blog. aj tag-teamed every interview with me (exactly what you’re thinking) and through the use of his upgraded iPhone (cool brag on behalf of aj), we were able to record everything and transcribe it for you lovely people.

videos:
-two new thrice songs – “the weight,” “all the world is mad”
-the ataris – san dimas high school football rules (yep, that one)
-p.o.s. – goodbye.

a recap of the event, and the setlists i gathered. enjoy. it took me a good 2-3 hours to put that shit together.
