show recap: every time i die (february 22, 2013)

The last time Every Time I Die played at Warehouse Live, things didn’t go so well. They got into a very publicized brawl with our famed 5 Star Security and probably weren’t too keen on ever playing the venue again. But things change, and it’s now water under the bridge. The band booked a show at the Studio, a place that was soon to be a haven for mayhem, flailing bodies and heavy rock and roll. Buffalo’s own would bring along a slew of heavy bands to open in The Acacia Strain, Vanna, Hundreth and No Bragging Rights – all to ensure that security has their hands full.

show recap: kendrick lamar [warehouse live] (december 29, 2012)

I wasn’t really going to review this show, but I thought I’d do a quick write-up, if not to start weworemasks off in 2013 on a creative/productive note. Kendrick Lamar initially planned this show back in October, the week of Good Kid, m.A.A.d city‘s release. Since October, GKMC has flipped the music industry upside down, with folks throwing out huge hyperboles comparing it to Nas’ Illmatic and what not. But regardless, it’s a perfect debut for one of hip-hop’s most promising artists in years. The original date was postponed for a special December treat, with Kendrick performing two shows back to back at Warehouse Live and House of Blues, both of which were completely sold out to the brim.

show recap: against me! + fake problems (november 1, 2012)

This will be the second time I’ve seen Laura Jane Grace front Against Me! this year and let me tell you, former teenage anarchists: She’s looking great. Dressed in a black tank, bra (a bra!), leggings, boots, and black eyeliner, Grace exuded a very cool Joan Jett vibe the second she walked on stage to massive applause. But the very instant the band counted off the opening march of “Transgender Dysphoria Blues,” it was old-fashioned Against Me! albeit with a bigger bite with the new band dynamic.

show recap: mewithoutyou/kevin devine (august 4, 2012)

The WWM frontier on shows has been slow as of late, so we jumped at the opportunity to catch a good lineup in mewithoutYou, whose supporting their brand new record Ten Stories, and our forever-buddy in Kevin Devine. The two have crossed paths before in the past, what with all the Brand New touring and all.

Not to mention, Warehouse Live’s Studio provides an unmatched intimate show-going experience that seems few and far between these days. Hit the jump for the recap.

Oh, and please forgive the pictures. Spotlights everywhere and no photo pit.

show recap: schoolboy q + the niceguys + dustin cavazos (june 29, 2012)

Schoolboy Q has been cleaning up blogs and hip-hop heads across the webs’ recommendations this year, hasn’t he? After Kendrick Lamar’s superb 2011, Schoolboy Q was the next up from Top Dawg Entertainment to showcase his talents, managing to hold his own on January’s Habits & Contradictions. It was strange that by the end of June, he was already headlining a set at Houston’s Warehouse Live Studio, and brought along our friends The Niceguys and Dallas’ Dustin Cavazos along for the ride.

scoremore follows local emcee doughbeezy throughout his first headlining show, which ended up being quite historic: it was sold out. dough performed songs off his newly released tape, blue magic, which hit the internets earlier this month. be sure to go back and grab that.

show recap: fun. (march 20, 2012)

fun. has really propelled themselves into the mainstream as of late. Their single “We Are Young” is being played to high hell on radio stations, Chevy commercials and much more. This particular show was book for the Warehouse Live studio, but due to the high demand of tickets, was moved to the Ballroom, which is roughly 4 times the capacity. And even THAT sold out.

show recap: beirut/ramesh (october 31, 2011)

When Zach Condon first oom-pah-pah‘ed his Balkan way into the indie consciousness, he found himself a warm home, snuggled in between the baroque pop of The Decemberists and the sonic parade of Neutral Milk Hotel, comfortably nested into a scene where the Rhineland reigned supreme. Hailed for his muli-instrument prowess, firm grasp on Balkan folk and Gypsy music, and especially his age (the wunderkind was a mere nineteen at the release of his highly praised Gulag Orkestar), Condon’s band Beirut were as cutting edge as they were ethnographically eclectic. Now three albums into their career, Beirut have expanded beyond their niche musical stylings and with an exercised sense of restraint on The Rip Tide, they’ve created an album that’s more focused on flexing Condon’s songwriting muscle and less on geo-tagging musical genres. In support of that album, Beirut brought horns a plenty to Houston’s Warehouse Live this past Halloween night, their first return visit since their momentous performance at the grand Free Press Summerfest music festival. show recap: sleigh bells/css (april 24, 2011)

It’s been said time and time again so I’ll say it this one, and final time: SLEIGH BELLS ARE FUCKING LOUD. I wondered to myself if Warehouse Live’s speakers could actually explode, and if and when they do, would it be entirely impudent of me to dive behind a fat kid? As if the wall of towering marshall stacks barricaded upon the stage wasn’t intimidating enough, the sounds erupting from them would be one of the notoriously noisiest bands in recent memory. Thank god I grabbed some ear-plugs beforehand.

show recap: coheed and cambria (april 12, 2011)

Catching wind of this tour was pretty exciting in and of itself. I mean, a whole “evening” with a band catered in a new wave of progressive and experimental rock music at the peak of your adolescence, playing the entirety of an album you’ve loved for years and have listened to 200 times is more than many fans can ask for. Coheed and Cambria brought their A game and their behemoth of a debut record to Warehouse Live this past Tuesday, where new and old fans alike would bond over a mutually revered album.

show recap: robyn (february 19, 2011)

photo credit: eric s. aka groovehouse for houston press

Robyn had a hell of a 2010. Culminating in the three-part Body Talk series, which was universally acclaimed by music critics worldwide, the Swedish dance-pop starlet poured real emotion into her unique brand of forward-thinking dance music, reinventing herself yet again from the fledgling pop star we first heard in the 1996 made for radio single “Show Me Love.” Though hardly having truly broken through on American soil due to lack of push by her labels, Robyn wrapped a successful Body Talk tour with a spectacular packed show at Houston’s Warehouse Live last Saturday, affirming that some of music’s best kept secrets are anything but.

show recap: glassjaw/tidal arms (february 20, 2011)

photo credit: all photos by sunbear/weworemasks.com

Ah, Glassjaw. It’s not every day that you can say that you saw Glassjaw twice in the span of one year. And it’s not every day that Glassjaw plays your hometown on your best friend’s birthday, and your entire blog staff (all three, ya bastards) hangs out together, gets silly drunk and gets to watch one of your favorite bands of all time. A belated happy birthday goes out to Sunbear, who managed to get daps from Daryl Palumbo while stumbling around in the pit and saw a massive Glassjaw set, highlighting 11 new songs that the band has put out in the last two months. Along for the ride were New York homers Tidal Arms (who gave us a fantastic interview prior — coming soon!) and These People.

show recap: against me! (january 25, 2011)

As anyone who has heard the song “I Was a Teenage Anarchist” (was being the operative word) from 2010’s well received, if not completely commercial album White Crosses, can tell you: Against Me! have come a long way from the primitive one man anarchist project that Tommy Gabel conceived back in 1997. Once spearheaded by Gabel’s throat-wrenching political lyrics and a brash sense of leftist politics, the band has flourished into a stadium sized outfit with blue collar anthems that’d make Springsteen proud. And of course with such a progression towards a friendlier pop sound, there were bound to be detractors, but as of Houston’s sold out Warehouse Live show this past Tuesday, there were none to be found amongst the fist-pumping throng of die-hard (former) anarcho punks.

show recap: the gaslight anthem (october 7, 2010)

To sum up the music of The Gaslight Anthem in one word: earnest. From their grassroots beginnings in New Brunswick, NJ with a heavy influence of Bruce Springsteen (the one and only time i’ll mention it, i swear) to a national touring act that can headline Warehouse Live’s 1500 capacity ballroom, the boys of The Gaslight Anthem have kept their “awww shucks” demeanor no matter the amount of success obtained. These guys are as blue-collar as they come, but sure bring out the big guns in support of their latest release American Slang.
