this tuesday sees the release of the wildly abstract paralytic stalks, of montreal’s eleventh album in their already kaleidoscopic discography. so excited are we in the weworemasks camp that we’ll be giving away a copy of the book, what’s weird, a stunning collection of over 100 paintings, sketches and doodles, as well as the insightful musings of their creator david barnes, of montreal’s resident art director/brother of kevin barnes.

So it looks like we’ve run the ‘fun lists’ into the ground, now it’s time to get down to the real deal. While Sunbear’s done a great job all year of keeping everyone up to date on the more ‘alternative’ sides of things and keeping me company at shows (mainly the drinking), he’s currently out on sabbatical in the Phillipines. This particular post was fairly huge for the blog, and in the past year, it’s infiltrated the top 20 most viewed pages on weworemasks.com. Granted, it’s no ‘Worst Weezy Lyrics’ (that thing has blown up), but it’s a lot of fun and I’ll probably continue to do this as long as it’s relevant. I’m guaranteeing good times here, but if there’s any memes you feel I’ve missed, feel free to post your favorites in the comments, or ignore it and talk shit about it to your friends.

For this year’s list, there’s a catch. I’ve “hired” my good friend Roque Strew to be my meme consultant for each of my choices in the top 10. There, he’ll be an analyst of my choices, asserting his opinion on each particular meme. The list is below the jump, and enjoy!

weworemasks presents: the LOST songs of 2011 [year-end lists] (2011)

I know, I know. You folks are probably upset that I used this theme last year, but get used to it. I think this is one of the cooler ideas I’ve had, and I really love LOST – so here we go with the 2nd annual list. “The LOST Songs” is an alphabetical list of 50 great songs (in my opinion, of course) that didn’t end up on any albums, EPs, mixtapes, etc. on my list this year. There were a lot of one-offs that deserve praise, and this is the platform. Below the jump, you’ll find these 50 songs in five different .zip files, groups of ten. Worst case scenario, 50 shitty songs from a shitty blogger. Best case scenario? You come out with like 20 songs you didn’t like, know or have before. weworemasks presents: the 2011 reader’s poll [year-end lists] (2011)

Every year, we usually let a handful of people have their $.02 to post their Top 10 lists of any given variety. And while it’s fun for me to read, it’s not exactly the most fun sitting here and editing 30 Top 10 lists for TV shows, albums, etc. That’s not including the HTML work. So this year, I took a page from the Pitchfork book of year-end lists to come up with a userpoll system. I had a group of 50 people (roughly) surveyed, and about 42 got back to me. These people are various folks in my friend circle, music industry or folks I’ve come across through networking (WWM and AP.net), so on and so forth. That being said, I feel like a lot of these folks allow WWM to influence their choices or something, because I like most of em!

So at this point, this is the third (heh) Thrice interview to date for weworemasks, and it was just as fun as the first two times. I’ve never been shy about how much I like this band, so it was cool to get the chance to sit down with the bassist, Eddie Breckenridge, to talk all things tour, Major/Minor and what album he’d be interested in playing in full for an anniversary if the opportunity came up.

weworemasks presents: the gaslight anthem – acoustics (2011)

there’s always that one band who records acoustic renditions of their songs, but never puts together a proper album or collection of said songs. the gaslight anthem, particularly brian fallon, has never been one to shy away from the acoustic guitar and the somber voice approach to the gaslight anthem’s four-release discography. thankfully, i was there to pick up the pieces along the way and hoard these 17 acoustic songs over the years. last night, i got a little inspired to create some solid artwork (let’s face it, that shit looks awesome) and put together a neat mixtape/comp for all you gaslight fans out there. oh and for the record, the script font on the cover is called “jersey stories!” it couldn’t be more perfect if i tried. tracklisting below the jump. share with all your friends, start a campfire, bust out the whiskey and have a grand old time.

edit: i took note of the tweet from brian/TGA’s camp. on one hand, i want to respect the band’s wishes. on the other, i’ve supported this band by buying tickets to their shows, copies of their albums and merch. this compilation is strictly for shits, giggles and bootleg collections. i’m not making any money off of it. i’ll take it down if the label contacts us directly, but until then, enjoy the post.

Happy 2011, weworemasks readership! As the last of the staff to submit his list, and after much debate, I’ve whittled down the lists to a simple Top 30 Albums of 2010. No mixtapes or concerts for me. That stuff is buried away in the annals of weworemasks for future generations to ridicule. Simply, these are my favorite albums, regardless of hype, talent, or entitlement. Some are obvious shoe-ins, and others were sneak attacks. Kind of like the difference between Sgt. Slaughter and Snake Eyes in the 2nd season opener of G.I. Joe: Arise, Serpentor, Arise!

While my personal lists are all but posted, we won’t be posting them until I get back from visiting my fam starting tomorrow through the 26th. I know you’re also thinking “But grizzly, who the hell is gonna be posting all day every day like a lame duck with no life?” Well, whatever slack Sunbear can pick up, he shall. I’ll have a computer and will surely be on updating shit sparsely as i wait in line for showers and the like.

I’m sure you’re thinking ‘WTF MATE,’ but it’s exactly what it sounds like. After all my lists were said and done, there was still a ton of great music to be shared. these are fifty songs that I loved that didn’t show up on any of my mixtape, album or EP choices in my year-end lists.
